(6) SHOULDER TO SHOULDER —• The final
episode of a six-week series recounting the epic
story of the struggle for women's rights in pre -
World War I England. 1914-1918: An internal con-
flict of the Women's Social and Political Union
results when Christabel feels that the aims of the
East End women under Sylvia's leadership, and
Sylvia's political affiliations are contrary, to the
aims of the WSPU and they must become two
separate organizations. Sylvia's plea to Asquith in
the House of Commons that he receive a deputation
of working women and listen to the question of
Women Suffrage is successful. With war declared.
the WSPU is disbanded, but Sylvia continues her
work in the East End as a committed pacifist. When
the war is over a new Franchise Act is introduced
giving eight million women over thirty the right to
vote: Sylvia: Angela Down. Mrs. Pankhurst: Sian
Phillips. Christabel: Patricia Quinn. Annie Ken-
ney: Georgia Brown. Asquith: Robert Hardy. (90
