A general meeting of the
Clinton gnvironmental.
Improvement Programme was
held last Wednesday, Zebruary
19, with approximately 20.
enthusiastic and interested
citizens in attendance.
Reports from various
committees revealed that, after
considerable correspondence
with governmental agencies
and other towns with similar
programs, a great deal of
ground work information has
been gleaned.
Ken Woods, chairman of the
Anti -Pollution Committee,
reported that the prime areas
of concern to his committee
were pin -pointing areas
requiring restoration, clean-up,
and general improvements.
He stressed a need for
exacting their purpose and
goals, reaching the community
by improving our com-
munications, and showing
some concrete evidence of
changes prior to Centennial.
The minutes of the Hor-
ticultural Committee were read
by Mrs. Ruth Deurn. Infor-
mation from other towns
regarding public planters etc.
have been received and will be
of great value to the Clinton
committee.
Post Office officials have
agreed that landscaping of the
Post Office is advisable.
The Clinton Horticultural
Society will be approached with
the idea of planting in the radar
antenna area . as a possible
Centennial project.
Beautifying some of the
vacant lots and general clean-
up were also on the list of
. priorities.
The services of John Carroll •
of the Vanastra landscape and
nursery business, and Mr.
Gordon Deurn have been.
engaged for these plans.
A report from the merchant
liaison revealed that the
merchants are favourable to
suggestions for tree planting in
containers, and that test
planting of perhaps five or 10
trees is agreeable to Council.
Along this vein, is the. im-
portance of public relations
with youth. An Opportunity for
Youth grant is being applied
for, to enlist the help of five or
six students for 13 weeks to help
in facelifting the Clinton core
area.
Spence Cummings from the
Huron County Planning
Department, elaborated on this
scheme, saying that there is .a
great deal of competition for
such grants received from this
area Such monies made
available to successful ap-
plicants are only used to pay
the wages of the working
students, Businessmen trust.
supply paint and materials,
Council is backing the grant
application, and if successful,
the students will be notified by
April 14, and will begin work at
the end of the school term.
Mr. Cummings went on to
stress the importance of park
areas as employment projects
