GODERICH PUBLIC SCHOOL BOARD
311
This its, the second of four (articles
to be submitted by the Goderich Public
School Board in order that the people
of Goderich may be fully informed re-
garding plans for the new public school.
In the article published last week,
the present condition of public school"
accommodation in Goderich was out -
Abed. It was noted that children and
teachers are working `under conditions
which endanger their health, hamper
their progress and Seriously limit their
educational opportunities. It was
noted further that because, of the in-
ci~easing school population and the
cumulative deterioration of seho9l pro-
perty the situation grows steadily
worse.
Inthis article, the steps already
taken by the Public. School Board ,will
be set forth.
Last year the Department of Edu-
cation was asked to make a survey of
public school conditions In Goderich
with a view to granting permission to
build. Mr. Pearson, Assistant Super-
intendent of Elementary Education,
came to Goderich and made a careful
study of public school needs here. Mr.

Pearson was so impressed with; the
seriousness of our school needs that
when the Goderich Public Schoc,,l Board
applied to the Minister 9f Education
for permission to bulli permission
was granted without further question,
althoi.lgh 'the Department of Education
(since it pays 'fifty per cent. of the
cost) is anxious' to limit building to
places where the need is most urgent.
- The survey showed that Central
School could not be „repaired or re-
modelled • in Such a way as to make
a satisfactory modern school even if
the necessary two acres of land were
available ; but that Victoria School
c:ouid still be a saluable unit when
provislou is made for new systems
of lighting and heating. Theconclu-
sion was reached that new aecommoda-
tion . would have to be provided and
that this could be done most economic-
ally by adding a new unit to Victoria
School.
The Minister •of Education granted
permission to build a unit sufficient to
meet the immediate needs. This unit
is planned to include:
7 classrooms
1 kindergarten
1 gymnasium -auditorium
1 manual training room
1 home economics room
1 library room
1 music room
1 health room
r 1 opportunity. room
1 Principal's office and waiting -room.
Although it is'advisable to •complete
the construction of the new unit as a
sine contract, present building con-
ditions may necessitate the work being
done: in stages.
Mr. G1harles°H.• Gillen, B. Arch., M.R.
A.I.C., of London, Ontario, was engaged
to preparp preliminary plans. These
plans were examined closely by the
Board, the publie- school inspector and
the principals. They were submitted

The three -act play, "The Improper
Mr. Dropper," presented on Thursday
and - Friday evenings ' under the aus-
pices of the Arthur ' Circle a of Knox
Presbyterian church, in the lecture
hall ,,,of the church, was greeted by
capacity audlences.- son' both nights.
Under the direction of Mrs. 11. K.
Revell, the performance was highly
creditable, both tb her and to the cast,
the members of which played their
roles with refreshing ease and grace.
The staging was well done; and on
both nights the performance was an
outstanding success. The play _ was
introduced by Rev. Richard Stewart.
The story of the plays was well
sustained by the ,cast ,.and overflowed
with humor and hilarious situations.
Bill "Ross as the "improper Henry
Propper" starred in the title role, and
.was splendidly ; supported by Mrs.
Floyd Lodge as the gay, vivacious
"Lillie Vandercotr " who on the ap-
pointed day of her wedding to ° an
impoverished ..European prifice elopes
with the family chauffeur, Henry Drop-
per, but to Billie's domineering mother,
far from proper. "Mrs. Vandercoff,"
a widow, splendidly. portrayed by Mrs.
Clayton 'Edward, pursues the eloping
pair to the Blue Flamingo - Hotel in
Florida, and arrives just in time to
prevent their marriage by a lase/
justice ofthe peace,-"Gillicuddy,'t play-
ed by Mr. Floyd Lodge. Mrs. Van-
dercoff • takea possession of her daugh-.
ter, bars Henry from the honeymoon -
suite, and plans to Marry Billie to •
"Prince Gregor • Oliverra (Mr. Ray
Cooper). With the aid of his best
friend, "Sid Hurd," a young ma ried
man, played by }-Glen Lodge, Iibnr
tries to save Billie from the impending,
ceremony, and masquerades as a col-
ored chambermaid.
A Nuptial Tangle
In the meantime, Sid's wife, "Dora"
(bars. Rtty _ Gooper) , and her wise-
' cracking sister _"Bonnie" -(Miss Mar-
. joie . MactieJ, have. followed- him to
Ithe hotel, in the belief that he is the
one who is eloping, aild to gain ev-
idence ``Dora' also masquerades as a
maid. Henry tells Billie to go through
with. _._the ceremony __i 9t :that he_ has `
bribed the, justice of .the peace to read
his naive instead of the Prince's, and
disguised as the, chambermaid he. will
call out "I do."'" The marriage cer-
emony is proceeded with, but in the
lively mix-up henry finds himself mar-
ried to Mrs. Vandercoff, who loses her
fortune if she ' remarries. The • un-
