annual picnic for members of Huron
County Council and their families was,
held at Harbor Park on Saturday after-
noon. Starting of with boat trips on
the lake, the ,program included games
and'races and a bountiful picnic supper.
County Clerk 'Norman Miller and
County Treasurer A. H. Erskine were
on the committee in charge of arrange-
ments.
To Thomas Inglis, eighty-three year"s
of age, warden of the county in 1929,
went the ,prize for the oldest person
present. This was presented to 'him
by Warden R. Shaddick, of Hensall,
who presided,.atthe supper tables.
RonaldErnest Beecroft!; of East
Wawanosh, seven -months -old grandson
of J. D. Beecroft, reeve of East Wawa -
nosh, was awarded the prize for the
youngest child present.
A tray went to Miss Elvera Churchill,
of. Toronto, winner of the supper draw.

Work in geography is eanding at
Western and it was thought that a
trained geographer who specialized in
climatology and land utilization was
necessary for the increasing research
in conservation and regional planning.
Mr. Nicholson took his B.A. degree•
in general arts from the local uni-
versity in 1943. He came to Canada
•in November, 1940, and transferred to
Western his credit toward a degree
-from the University of London, Eng-
land. By doing ti!aay duty and night
duty he was able to drive to Western
from Port Albert three times a week,
to take' his course here. When moved
to Mount Hope, he took Home evening
classes at Toronto and McMaster Uni-
versity.
Mr. Nicholson returned to England in.
1944 to serve on the Continent in
Belgium and Norway.

Alexander, Governor-General of Can-
ada, will officiate at the opening cere-
monies in connection with the Inter-
national plowing, match to be held at
Pott Albert from October 15 to 18, it
is announced by J. A. Carroll, secre-
tary -manager of the Ontario Plowmen's
Association. -
October 15, the first day, Is to be
given over entirely to plowing events
confined to Huron Bounty farmers; so
the official ceremonies in which Lord
Alexander will take part will be held
on Wednesday, October p 16, the first
day of open events.
The International plowing match is
being revived this year after having
been suspended for the last five years
on account of wartime conditions, and
this year's event is being announced as
"The Victory Match." Applications
for space for exhibition purposes, Mr.
Carroll also announces, exceed all past
records, and with ample space available
on the former Port Albert .airfield of
the R.C.4.F., where the match is to
be held, this feature of the event will
be of large proportions. - `

Lorne 1). Manson,. well-known London
farm equipment -dealer, vas fatally
shot near Camrose, Alta., on Tuesday,
according to word received in London
by relatives Tuesday. Mr_ Manson died
shortly after the accident "occurred.
Ile was hunting crows in the Camrose
district, RtC.M.P. officials reported,
when a shotgun in the hands of • a
cbmpanion accidentally • discharged.
The charge bit him in 'the' stomach.
Mr. Manson left London on June 28
with his wife And ' son, Murray, age
ten, o11 an automobii,b and trailer holi-
day trip to Western Ct1,nada. A card
was received from the family Tuesdi y,
which had been mailed on Saturday.
The victim was approximately forty-
six years of age, and Was born 'in
Zurich. lie lived in this district until
fourteen years ago, when he moved to
Thornclale, where he lived for four
.,years. I'or the' past ten years he has
lived just- outside London, residing pa
Wharncliffe road. south of the 1Viitery
Hill. He operated his business at 83
King street. Relatives have received
no ,details as to funeral arrangements.
