The suddenness of the death of Mr. .Tames (Shep) Nicholson of Blyth on Sunday., March 10tH, was a shock to his family and the community in which be had lived for malty years. Mr. Nicholson was about as usual on the previous rriday but complained of. feeling unwell the foiloNing day, • and passed away early on Silndayt. morning. He was in his 76th year. Mr. Nicholson had lived in Myth with his wife and son Albert since last _September— Ile—was— the _ son. bf 1&r. and Mrs. Thomas Nicholson who were in charge of the .toll gates, one near their home in the township of Hullett and the other on the boundry road Which turns off the Auburn -Blyth road towards, the union cemetery. These gates were put up for -auction by the government each year, and` for seven years••his father wash the highest bid- der, offering between $900 and . 11.000. At the end of their seven-year term the government discontinued the ,gates .and the township took over the upkeep of the roads. Nineteen years ago •they moved to Auburn, and last September to Blyth.
