Their Cultivation Was Almost Entirely
Confined to. the Monks.
The ancient cultivation of the vide in
England appears to have been almost
entirely confined to the monks, who, as•
the ruins of their monasteries prove,
had' a shrewd eye for the most Sheltered
and fertile spots in the land. They, too,
were the only people who in thefeudal
agesehad leisure or inclination for sue`n
nice work as vine -growing.
When Henry ,the Eighth suppressed
the religious houSes the monks became
fugitives and, vagabonds, and the "Eng-
. lish vineyards ran to waste untended.
..Anether reason for the disappearance
.of .the industry from England is to be
foantlein the fact that during the Middle
Ages the prohibitive taxes imposed on
• all foreign products made the -wines of
the Continent almost unbuye.ble luxuries
.and, therefore. the English had to' he
'content with the inferior produce of
their own vines:
As these duties were. decreased the
superior wines of more favored countries
gradually drove the English. out Of the
• market. More than one attempt has
. been made to revive open-air vine -grow-
ing in England, and a few years ago
wine not unlike a thin champagne was

What are the places like where Lon,

New , Food Tariff Makes Nation Depend
More on Dog.
."Two sorts of animals for slaughter-
ing purposes; namely, horse g and dogs,
have never until now reached so large
consumption as in the fourth quarter
of 1905." •
This is a 'startling sentence from an
article in the I3adische Landes -Zeitung,
of Mannheim, discussing the effect of the
new German Wefts on foodstuffs.
The rates of increase, too, are start-
ling. The number of slaughtered horses
rose from 44,659 in the first . quarter of
1904 to 52,584 in the first quarter of
.1905.
"According to the. official, records,"
concludes the article, "there were s
405 dogs slaughtered during the fourth
quarter of 1905. Here:- are reckoned
only the common species of dogs, which,
under •official inspection, were compelled
to give up their lives and allow them-
selves to be eaten. Hence, it Will -be seen
that, our nations food depends more
and more on the dog." •

For the Overworked.—What are the
causes of despondency and melancholy?
A'disordered liver is one cause and a

a disordered stomach, a disordered sto-

body into subjechen and the victim
feels sick all over. Parmelee's Vegetable

state and relief will follow their Use.
