WAR MAKES TN SOLDIERS.
The Industry Has Prospered for 130
Years.
Much care is expended in the manu-
facture of leaden or tin soldiers. The
fabrication of these toys is mainly per-
formed at NUremburg, and dates from
the -military enthusiasm aroused ty
' Frederick the Great in Germany and
throughout Europe by his surprising"
exploits in ,,the Seven • Years' Wart
The best artists are hired to furnish
modelfor the soldiers, and they axe-
rcrupulously careful to conferm to the
military costumes, of the period and
country to which the figures are sup-
posed to belong. The shapes designed
are engraved upon moulds of slate or
brass, into which the melted tin or lead
- is poured through a small orifice. -,
When moulded the soldiers have to he
painted, and this is done by women at
their own homes, who receive no raore •
la ages than $1 a 'week.
Care is talcen to select gaudy collars.
The packing is also intrysted to wo-'
men. made of tin; the soldiers are
packed in wooden boxes, all of which
come from Sonneberg, in Thuringia.
- The extreme cheapness of these boxes
Indicates plc low wages of the work-
. !nen,' nearly all of whom, it has been
Observed, die of consumptien. When
the toys are made of solid lead, they
are packed in cardboard boxes with
glass tops.
This toy -soldiery industry has pros-
pered for 130 years, though the demand
falls off in periods of prolonged peace,

Western bride goes to marriage as she
would to a theatre, "expecting to be
heppy, interested, amused." The East-.

basis of marriage in this country, is
a sufficient safeguard to the ',Ace.
From the 'Man's purely. 8elfish Point

the Eastern and'the Western marriege

"may refuse to be companion, helpmeet,

-she , may even refuse to be the mother
of hischildren, and he has no re-
