A new "victim surcharge" on most pro- vincial offenses fines will be lev- ied as of January I in Ontario. The Ministry of the Attorney General announced the surcharge Friday, saying the monies col- lected would be going to support victim's services. The surcharge will apply leo all offences prosecuted under the Pro- vincial Offenses Act, except park- ing. That means that even a speed- ing ticket or other traffic offense will be subject to'a surcharge. For fines less than150 the sur- charge will be $5. for fines of $1,000 or more, the surcharge will be 20 percent. Anyone convicted of impaired driving will be paying even more. The standard fine for that offense has been increased from $750 to ($1,200 - making the higher sur- charge applicable. 4 ► ► Kitchen safety tips By Alan Swinton On top of family grudges and conversations on politics, food poi- soning can really ruin a holiday. • Food poisoning results from the creation of bacteria on food when it reaches a certain tempera- ture. The bacteria can cause nau- sea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever or cramps and occurs mainly because of improper stor/ge. • So, the health care profession- als advise people to be careful when shopping. Make sure cans aren't dented or bulging, and never buy foods without a freshness (Irate. • Frozensfi55r ds should be rock hard and brought hoice.fast. Perhaps the ground could be probed for fallen stones, gently uncovered, the infor- mation copied, in full, -and recov- ered. The perimeter can be marked with trees - fences fall down the holes could be levelled with some donated soil, then plant "Patches" of old time flowers, such as myrtle, lily of the valley, daffodil bulbs, narcissus, peony roots - no small bushes - they require upkeep, any- thing that renews itself each year. We all have extra of the above that we could donate to the project, making it a memory garden in a very short time -.no grass to cut. Our early settlers would some- times have brought a root of a fa- vourite Flower with them to remind them of the place they had left be- hind. Flowers are like pictures in a book, we all stop to look at them, as we do the lovely gardens on Hu- ron Strel;t West. Perhaps a group could undertake a research of the areas older set- tlers, from information in the "shoe - boxes", that are often found in older homes, containing old death cards, clippings etc., search old land records for names at the Registry office. The people at the Regional Room at the Weldon Li- brary, U.W.O., London are very helpful. The Ontario Archives at Toronto have early wills and a host of other research tools, we need only ask them for help. The Huron County Branch O.G.S. would help any way possible, but our numbers in Huron County are small, we need the young folks to help, both with the planning and the work. I'm sure council would welcome help and assist if possi- ble. In a very short time it could he a beauty spot that requires no up- keep, just renews itself, and would be a tribute to those very early settlers who worked so hard to make this a great Township , County and Country.
