Trying to get
everything
in one year
Lockout, strike, greedy, mon-
eygrubbers, stubborn, in-
sensitive - there are a lot of
words to describe what has been
going on in the National Hockey
League.
Oh how times have changed.
When Hockey Hall of Famer
Alex Delvecchio retired from
the best pro hockey league in the
world back in 1974, after a 24
year career with the Detroit Red
Wings, hockey strikes were a
thing of the far future.
Recently, one of the best
players ever to lace up the
blades was in Exeter and he was
not in the least bashful about
making a few comments on the
current situation.
"I think they should sit down
and play the game. I don't think
they're thinking of the people
coming up. They're just thinking
of themselves," said the man
who scored 456 goals in the big
show.
The current players are only
hurting themselves because
while veterans had to fight off a
stream of rookies this year for
the few jobs open, next year
there will be two sets of fresh
faces trying to make the parent
club.
When Delvecchio, a kid from
Fort William broke into the
league in 1950, he said he re-
ceived a signing bonus of $200.
The legend goes is that his lin-
emate Gordie Howe was given
a hockey jacket.
Salaries have certainly
changed but I doubt the cost of
living and that increase are in
line with one another.
"These guys.make as much as
we did in our careers in one
year," said Delvecchio.
There are many issues on the
line for the NHL players and the
owners, and most, if not all
hockey fans, are pretty certain
this could be the first pro-
fessional season which won't
take place. Delvecchio suggests
negotiations could continue
while they keep playing.
"It seems to me they are trying
to get everything in one year.
They're making great money.
Why don't they just keep ironing
it out?"
Ringette team returns
The Ontario Junior Ringette
team, featuring Hensall's Cara
Gardner, will be in the area on
Wednesday and Thursday. To-
day the team will practice in
Hensall at both II a.m. and 1:30
p.m. and will play a game at 7
p.m. They are looking for a team
to play but if not, fans can look
forward to a very fast inter -
squad game. Thursday the girls
will be on the ice for a 10 a.m.
practice, will host a clinic for lo-
cal players at 11 a.m. and have
their final practice of the Hensall
trip at 1:30 p.m.
From the sidelines: I spelled
Chris McDonald's name wrong

Monteith of the Exeter peewee
