ST. MARYS - Six games in seven days is a lot of hockey, but when
you can -win them all, and take home a trophy, you don't mind.
That's what the Exeter Peewee Legions did and the capper was the
fact that they won the Royal Canadian Legion District 'C' Peewee
Tournament on Saturday.
In St. Marys, Exeter, the regional Legion champs, opened with a 2-1
win over Listowel, hammered Seaforth 8-0 and dropped New Hamburg
3-0.
Against Listowel, Jeff Campbell scored twice with the other from Ja-
son Grenier while Ryan Groot and Barry Parsons drew the assists.
Later in the day, Grenier took control as he had a big six -point game,
notching three goals and setting up three more in the 8-0 win over Sea -
forth. Groot, Steven Farquhar and Andrew Maver also set up goals.
Scott Keys scored two goals and set up two more while Craig Over-
holt notched two and Campbell also scored with two assists from Kian
MacDougall.
In the final game, Campbell scored twice with the other from Grenier
while Groot and Parsons had assists. Goalie Ryan Sullivan played very
well the whole tournament as he had both shutouts.

Working with your defence: initiating the attack
To develop effectively, de-
fence players must practice the
specialized skills of their posi-
tion. Do you consider defence's
special needs when preparing
your practice plans?
The goal for defence in the de-
fensive zone is to gain posses-
sion of the puck and initiate the
offensive attack. In order to ini-
tiate effective breakouts, defence
must develop skating, puck con-
trol, passing, and read and react
skills.
Teach your defence to move
the puck to an open teammate as
soon as they gain possession, us-
ing direct passes whenever possi-
ble. Defence should never hesi-
tate when passing to an open
teammate, and should use the net
as a screen to avoid forecheckers
if all teammates are covered.
Here are a few more tips:
• teach defence to use head and
body fakes when making break-
out passes to deceive forecheck-
ers and to use puck protection
tactics such as deception and
skating ability to maintain pos-
session;
• defence should read fore -
checking pressure by looking
hack over their shoulders when
Coaching Tip
skating back for the puck;
• encourage defence to carry
the puck as a last alternative, and
only when there is little or no
pressure from defenders.
.Here are some suggestions for
practice:
• use passing drills which force
defence to pass and receive
while skating forward, backward
and laterally... they should never
stand still with the puck;
• to develop read and react
skills, utilize drills where the/de-
fence must skate back w their
own end to retrieve a puck, read
pressure applied by a forecheck-
er and react with appropriate tac-
tics.
