Snowmobiling course mandatory
Pineridge Club hosted a driving course Saturday for youngsters
13y Fred Groves
T -A staff
HENSALL - It's drivers education on snow.
Saturday morning 25 area young people gathered in Hen-
sall and took a Snowmobile Driver Training Course.
Sponsored by the Pineridge Snowmobile Club, the six -
hour course is basically mandatory for youth, as young as
12, if they want to dri»e a snowmobile.
"This course is mainly for the kids. It gives them the priv-
ilege of driving on the trails," said organizer Bill Russell.
Over the past few years, the Pineridge Snowmobile Club
has grown in popularity and they currently have 160 miles
of groomed trails which stretch from west of Exeter to
Mitchell and will soon be linking up with those up to Clin-
ton.
"It's a sport that is catching on again because of the trails
in the arca," said Russell.
While the training course provided a lot of the basics, in-
cluding keeping the machine running properly when out on
the trails, safety was also stressed.
"A lot of parents don't know what is involved. It's the
same as a beginners drivers license," said Russell.
Snowmobile drivers under -16 can not go on the travelled
portion of any road, however, with permits issued fol-
lowing Saturday's course, they can go onto the trails.
The course is first rate and the last one, held on No-
vember 26, had 34 participants. On Sa urday there was also
one being held at the same time in Bru.efield.
"We're licensed through the Ministry of Transportation.
We have master instructors that give us an updated course
every few years," said Russell.
One of the hazards of driving a snowmobile is alcohol.
While you may think there was no need to tell the young
people about that concern, Russell said the course docs
mention the affects of alcohol.
"We stress that quite a bit," he said.
In early October, the Ontario Snowmobile Safety Com-
mittee hosted a conference in Markham wh.ch had several
key stakeholders. There were club representatives, industry,
researchers and legislators present.
The purpose of the conference was to develop a long-
term strategy for snowmobile safety. While snowmobiling
is becoming more and more expensive, the popularity in-
creases as it generated S513 million for Ontario's economy
last win-
ter, up
from S300
the pre-
vious
year.
Last
year in
Ontario,
23 people were killed as a result of snowmobile accidents
down from an average of 39 the previous four years. Cours-
es like the one held by Pineridge on Saturday are helping
make the difference.
Here arc just a few guidelines to help you have a safe
snowmobiling season.
• learn safe snowmobiling procedures by taking a course
or attending a clinic (like the one on Saturday).
• make sure you properly maintain your snowmobile.
• know the rules of the local trails and the community.
• know what trail signs mean and follow the directions
given. -
• dress appropriately - be on the lookout for a sudden
shift in conditions. Instructor Bill Russell, taught snowmobile
• emergencies can be prevented - use your common Ben Burnett, right; and Rob McIntosh, left.
"It gives them the privilege
of driving on the trails. "
sense.
• the protection of the snowmobiler is the responsibility
of every snowmobiler.
