Dashwood families welcome
Aussie, exchange students
Students from Australia come to spend Christmas in Canada

DASHWOOD - Two teenaged
girls travelled from Australia last
Monday to spend their summer hol-
iday experiencing a Canadian
Christmas. The cultural exchange is
sponsored by the Exeter Lions
Club.
Kellie Schofield
from Galton,
Queensland is
spending six weeks
with the Hoffman
family in Dash-
wood. Leah Drew,
of Sydney is staying with the
Barnes family. Both families have
daughters close in age to the girls.
Since they arrived the girls have
attended classes at the high school
and have been to London to shop
and see the lights in Victoria Park.
Schofield and Drew both are en-
thusiastic about the snow we have
received and plan to go for their
first snowmobile ride as soon as
there is enough on the ground.

Visiting Niagara Falls, the CN
Tower, going to the Nutcracker on
Ice and seeing the deer at the Pin-
ery Park are all on the list of things
to do during their trip. Both Scho-
field and Drew arc enjoying the
weather,
"This is the most snow I've ever
seen or the coldest I've ever been,"
said Drew. An average
temperature for Aus-
tralia now, during the
summer, is 32 degrees.
Some confusion over
the meaning of words
gave the Hoffman family
a laugh during the first few days.
The Hoffrnans made sure that they
had tea in the house for Schofield,
what they didn't know was that tea
to her meant supper. Now the fam-
ily makes sure they mean the same
thing when they ask Schofield what
she would like.
The holiday traditions in Canada
differ somewhat from what the
girls are used to at home. Because
of the temperatures, a hot meal of

turkey and stuffing is not ap-
petizing. Instead a meal of cold
harp, chicken, fish and salad is
more the norm. Schofield said
stockings are also a different tradi-
tion, at home they put their names
on pillowcases instead. She has
brought some of her Christmas tra-
ditions with her to Dashwood. She
and her sister made an advent cal-
endar which t!ie family is opening
during the holidays.
Drew and Schofield are both look-
ing forward to taking part in the
semi -formal dance at the high
school on Thursday.
The girls seem to fit very well
into their surrogate families. The
only hitch in any of the plans so far
is a suggestion from Drew's father
that he come for a visit while she is
here. She doesn't share his en-
thusiasm.
"This is my holiday after all," she
said.
