Firefighters allowed lights on cars Chief Gary Middleton says Exeter firefighters have been waiting two years for this EXETER - Local volunteer fire- fighters will now be allowed to put flashing green lights on their own vehicles when responding to fire calls. Provincial transportation minister Mike Farnan announced the new regulation on Friday, and it was welcomed by Exeter fire chief Gary . Middleton. The green lights will identify fire- lighters' vehicles, but like blue lights on snow plows, they do not give the drivers any special priv- ileges., . One collision involved Exet- er's new mayor. Police say mayor Ben Hoo- genboom's station wagon collided with a vehicle driven by Phillip Ol- iver of Hensall at the intersection of Main and Simcoe Streets in Exeter last Wednesday. Reid was not injured, but vehicle dam- age was described by police as se- vere. On Thursday evening, vehicles driven by Chanthaamphone Phim- rachanh and Gwendolyn O'Rourke. both of Vanastra, collided on Main Street in Exeter. Police had no fur- ther details on the accident. Last Sunday, vehicles driven by Jay Kinahan of Strathroy and Doug Poulton of RR2 Kippen collided at the intersection of Main and Huron Streets in Exeter. Poulton and a passenger suffered minor injuries. Also last Sunday, Frances Lorenz of Goderich struck a deer on Con- cession 2-3 of Hay Township. Lo- renz was not injured, but vehicle damage was moderate. Over the past week, the OPP say they have stopped about 800 cars at RIDE program check points on lo - i cal roads. Got a News Tip? Township building official Milt Deitrich reported to Hay council that in the first 10 months of 1994, building per- mits worth some $2.38 mil- lion had been issued in the township. That figure is just about double the building starts for the first 10 months of 1993, only $1.19 million.
