Times Advocate, 1994-12-14, Page 3IN THE NEWS i Grand Bend will review development charges Two developers who can't get along means a traffic road study will be done By Fred Groves T -A staff GRAND BEND - A squabble between neigh- bouring developers in Grand Bend has prompted that village's council to review both its development charges by-law and begin to conduct a traffic road study. At the recent council meeting, Roger Howard of the Rice Capital Group brought concerns about fu- ture developments and more specif- ically, concerns over a possible by-pass road between Highways 21 and 81. Both the Rice Group and the Patter- son developers are looking to build on land which are beside each other on Highway 81. In a letter to council, Howard and the Rice Group indicated that the moving of a road allowance would be beneficial to the Patterson's project called Home - Quest. "We wanted to make sure our inter- ests were being looked after," said Howard at the meeting. "We were anxious to get our plan into the ministry and started next year." The letter also indicates that prior to the adoption of a zoning by-law on, the Home Quest property, that the preferred alignment of the proposed by-pass road be settled. Also stated in the letter, was that the Rice Group said that Home Quest has indicated that a road al- lowance located partially within or • en to their "We h you'd an agr Now w into so esle's and 111 fortun proposed development, would detract from the mar- ketability or livability of their project. "The idea was to have the two developers come to an agreement. To my knowledge that isn't hap- pening," said Grand Bend mayor Cam Ivey. "We hoped you'd come to an agreement. Now we put it into someone else's hands and that's un- fortunate," added Ivey. Lambton County planner Anne Marie Howard was at the meeting and. said, "by-pass is a little bit of a misleading term to use. 1 think we need to look at the overall 'roads needs for the annexed areas." She was referring to lands which have been taken over by Grand Bend since last year's annexation with Bosanquet and Stephen Townships. Grand Bend administrator Paul Turnbull agreed that a traffic road study was necessary and that it should be done in the entire village. He added that it would be very im- portant as far as future concerns go. "To move forward with the in- formation we have now would lock us out of some of the options we have," said Turnbull. Anne Marie Howard said that the review of the development charges by-law would involve a public pro- cess and the traffic road study could take as long as six months. "It depends on the scope of the work you're under- taking," she said. Turnbull said he hoped the study would take less than six months, but however long it takes, it is nec- essary. "The rest of the village, the road pattern is pretty well developed, you're not going to change it," said councillor Bob Mann. oped come to eement. e put it Ineone hands at's un - ate" A white Toronto squirrel? TORONTO - Is one of Ex- eter's white squirrels miss- ing? When a white squirrel turned up on the front fawn of the Queen Street Mental Health Centre, it attracted the attention of Toronto Sun col- umnist Linda Barnard, tried to find out more about the white wonders, and called Exeter. In her column published in last Sunday's Sun, "Dreamin' of a White Squirrel" Barnard relates her experiences talk- ing with unofficial white squirrel ambassador Andy DeBocr, Times -Advocate ed- itor Adrian Harte, and Mar- ion Darling. However, she points out that Marionvillc, Missouri makes a much bigger deal of its white squirrel population with aggressive tourist pro- motions, as docs Olney. Il- linois. "Listen up, Exeter. Don't hide your squirrel under a bushel. How about an annual white squirrel fest?" sug- gested Barnard. "And I promise I'll he there to toss out the first nut." The photo accompanying the article wasn't of one of Exeter's squirrels, though. After all, Toronto now has .;one of its own. More history on Hibbert schools sought STAFFA - The Hibbert History Committee, in compiling its re- search into the township's history, has concluded that more needs to be told about the Hihbert's schools in the upcoming history book. The Committee also reports that several donations have been re- ceived as memorial gifts to help with the history hook project. They are also selling gift certificates and allowing pre -payment of books at the Hibbert Township Office on De- cember 15, 20, and 22 from 1-3 p.m. On January 8, there will be a Hib- bert Township Levee at the Dublin Community Centre.
