Thursday afternoon, at the Lamb -
ton County Heritage Museum near
Grand Bend, the Township of Bo-
sanquet became the Town of Bo-
sanquet.
"Today is a day for .eminiscing
and it's a day of history," said for-
mer councillor John Russell.

what the Township of Bosanquet
was."
Over 150 well-wishers, including
politicians from neighbouring mu-
nicipalities, attended the ceremony
which also saw mayor Fred Thom-
as and his new council officially
sworn in.
In January, 1993, township coun-
cil decided to adopt a ward system
to represent all areas of the mu-
nicipality. Thomas said that as a
township they could have only four
wards but as a town they could
have six which has meant the ex-
pansion of council from five to sev-
en members.
Bosanquet has a year-round pop-
ulation of about 5,000 which swells
to as many as 20,000 during the
summer. There are 3,500 house-
holds and 2,800 trailers.
A piper led the new council into
the ceremony on Thursday and dur-
ing his address, Russell, who leaves
council after nine years said, "as
mayor Fred said, all we really did is
drop the 'ship'. We're letting it go
out on the lake."
Among those attending the cer-
emony was Lambton-Middlesex
MP Rose -Marie Ur who not only
brought congratulations to the
town, but a Canada -Ontario Infra-
structure grant worth $436,000.
Funding will be used to construct
a new building to house the fire
hall, municipal garage, water de-
partment and related offices. This
will be the first fire hall built in the
community. Work is scheduled to
start immediately and be completed

Ure said that earlier in the week,
she stood in the House of Com-
mons and stated of Bosanquet, "the
province of Ontario's newest town
has a very historic history which
started in 1821."
Settlement began in Bosanquet in
1821 with a 390 -acre land grant
from Asa Townsend.
Residents of the town said good-
bye to several, what will now be-
come, artifacts as a town capsule is
being filled with such things as
class lists and flags.
"We have built the time capsule
which we would like to initiate to-
day. We'd like to keep it open until
July 1," said Bosanquet clerk Carol
McKenzie.

She also said that local schools
will be assisting in writing a com-
position about the township's his-
tory.
