NHL referee does Panthers game
By Fred Groves
T -A staff
EXETER - You just never know
who is going to show up for a hock-
ey game at the South Huron Rec-
reation Centre.
Last Tuesday afternoon, in their
Huron -Perth Conference high
school hockey season opener, the
hosting SHDHS Panthers had a
special guest referee.
Skating along the boards was
Don VanMassenhoven who is in
his first full -year as a referee in the
High school sports
Senior hoopers make
it to consolation
EXETER - The boys basketball season is young and the South Hu-
ron District High School senior Panthers are hoping to turn things
around this week as they open Huron Conference play.
Oil the weekend, they hosted their own Optimist Tournament and
although they made it to the consolation final, were beaten 49-32 by
Mitchell.
The Panthers opened up the annual eight-day tournament with a
82-42 loss to the tough East Elgin Eagles. Down 24-10 at the end of
the first quarter and 44-20 at the half, South Huron was led by the 15
point effort of guard Bryan McAllister. Dwayne McNab had a
strong game, hitting for 14 points including four three point bombs.
Saturday morning, the Panthers rebounded to beat Glencoe 44-34
on 13 points from Marty DeBruyn, 10 by McAllister and eight from
McNabb. South Huron held a slim 13-10 lead after eight minutes
and 24-20 at the half.
Petrolia's Lambton Central won the tournament as thcy beat Park:
hill's North Middlesex Marauders 79-63. Ryan Stewart, a former
Panther, had 17 points for the Maraudcrs.
Wednesday ail three Panthers teams open their Huron Conference
regular season schedule while the juniors play in their own tourna-
ment this weekend.
Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. the Panthers open against Medway
Cowboys.
National Hockey League. With the
NHL lockout into its second month,
he is trying to stay in shape.
"I'm just skating, getting some
conditioning. I love doing games,"
said the Strathroy resident who has
been refing since he was 15.
He hasn't been doing any re-
fereeing, at any level but has been
playing a little rec hockey and ad-
mits to scoring the odd point.
"This is the first game I've re-
fereed," he said after the host Pan-
thers lost 5-3 to the Goderich Vi-
kings. "I've got calls but I wasn't
available."
He's officiated everything from
novice right up to Major 'A', Amer-
ican Hockey League and now, the
National Hockey League. So, what
did he think of doing a high school
game in Huron county.
"It was pretty good hockey, thcy
work hard. I was impressed with
the calibre, some of them could
play junior," said VanMassenhov-
en.
While he can not give his opinion
on the NHL strike because he is an
employee of the league, he did say
that there will be no bumping
which would see NHL officials go
down to the AHL.
"They've got guys to do those
leagues. To move us would put
somebody out of a job," he said.
VanMassenhoven added that if
he hadn't been promoted to a full-
time NHL referee, and that he was
still splitting between the two pro
leagues, he would be working full-
time officiating in the AHL right
now.
South Huron forward Marty DeBruyn goes up for a lay up against East Elgin during the Panthers
opening game of their own senior boys' basketbal tournament held on the weekend. South Hu-
ron made to the consolation final where they were beaten.

The former Ontario Provincial
Police officer may be re -thinking
his career options because of the
lengthy strike and won't rule out the
possibility of returning to law en-
forcement.
"I was trying to get back with the
OPP. If the season gets cancelled, I
may go back part-time."
Tough start: Itwas a dis-
appointing way to start the season
last Tuesday in Exeter as the Pan-
thers, sporting their new uniforms,
lost 5-3 to the Vikings.
Blair Moir continues to be a
spark for the Panthers as he scored
two goals with the other coming
from Dwight Gingerich.
Friday, the Panthers travelled to
Clinton and once again came out on
the short side of things, this time an
even more closer 4-3 score.
"It was 0-0 going into the third
period," said Panthers coach Dave
Cox.
Scoring for the visitors were Ja-
son Hodgson with two and Ted
Hoffman had the other.
"We played well considering we
were missing guys with injuries
and three of our seven defensemen
weren't there," said Cox.
South Huron will see action next
on Wednesday when they travel to
St. Marys.

In order to increase the capacity of the water supply in the Town of Exeter, the Exeter P.U.C.
is planning a project which will connect the Town to the Lake Huron Water SupplySystem. The
project involves the construction of trunk watermains through the Township of Stephen and the
of a new booster pumping station on land adjacent to the Township of Stephen
works garage west of Crediton. The trunk watermain will be constructed along Huron County
Rd. No..4 from the Lake Huron Pipeline at Shipka to Conc. Rd. 10/11, along Stephen
Township Conc. Rd. 2/3 from County Rd. No. 4 to Sideroad 20/21, and along Sideroad 20/21
from Conc. Rd. 2/3 to the Town of Exeter Boundary. Construction of the works is planned to
begin in the spring of 1995. The estimated cost of the works is approximately $2,400,000.
The Province of Ontario is providing grant assistance for this project. The Ontario Clean Water
will own and operate the new works when completed.
The above project is being planned under Schedule B of the Class Environmental
Assessment for Municipal Water and Wastewater Projects. A water storage component had
previously been included in this project. The water storage facility is now being considered as
a separate project and is currently going through a site selection process. That project will be
subject to a separate Schedule B process. The decision to separate the water storage
component was made to permit the works within the Township of Stephen to proceed at an
earlier date.0
Subject to comments received as a result of this Notice, and the receipt of all necessary
approvals, the Ontario Clean Water Agency intends to proceed with the design and
construction of the water supply project.
An Environmental Screening Report, documenting the EA process followed, is available for
review at the following locations:
Exeter P.U.C. Township of Stephen
379 Main Street Municipal Offices
Ontario 38 Victoria Street
NOM ISO Crediton, Ontario
(519) 235-1350 (519) 234-6331
interested persons should provide written comments to the Exeter P.U.C. on the proposal
within 30 calendar days from the date of this Notice. Comments shall be directed to the
address above.
If serious environmental concerns arise regarding the project, which cannot be resolved in
discussions with the municipality, a person/party may request that the Minister of
Environment and Energy "bump -up" the project to a higher level of environmental assessment.
"Bump -up" requests must be received by the Minister at the address below within 30 calendar
days of this Notice. A copy of the request shall be sent to the Exeter P.U.C. If there is no
request for a "bump -up" received by December 30, 1994, the water supply project will proceed
to design and construction as presented in the planning documentation.
