George,
wake up
this isn't
the movies
Did you see the punch?
It wasn't really much of a
punch thrown by dinosaur
George Foreman onto the chin
of young Michael Moorer.
Mind you I doubt if I, or any-
one else out there would want to
go up to big Gcorgc and say
"okay big guy, right here."
But the replay showed that
Foreman just got inside, which
is a key in boxing and landed
what seemed to be not that hard
of a punch. While we have to
give Foreman credit for winning
the heavyweight title, we also
must, for a moment examine the
sincerity of professional boxing.
First, why is a 45 -year-old
even getting a shot at the title? Is
the ladder to the top so full of
broken and splintered rungs that
it is tricky to get to the top?
Foreman's last fight was 17
months ago when he lost on
points to Tommy Morrison. Sor-
ry, but while some may says its
a great and wonderful thing that
Foreman can still climb into the
ring, I think its a bit of a dis-
grace that he's even there.
I remember a line from the
movie 'White Men Can't Jump'.
One of the co-stars said "the sun
even shines on a dog's backside
once in a while."
Well big George, be it the sun
or the boxing gods, or whoever,
somebody looked down on you
the day you decided to go toe -
to -toe with Moorer.
There are a couple of othcr
movies, about boxers that have
some surprise endings. One was
called Diggstown with Lou Gos-
sett Jr. and the other was Rocky.
Foreman, in his win over
Moorer, and even his proposed
attempt to take on Mike Tyson
when he gets out of prison,
seems to be a cross between the
two main characters in those
flicks.
In Diggstown, Gossett played
a 45 year-old boxer who had to
beat 10 boxers in a 24-hour time
period. He did it and the movie
really showed all the money -
influence boxing has.
Rocky was another case of
that sun falling down at the right
time and the right place, he got
lucky and went onto stardom - I
guess that's why they make se-
quels.
But Foreman's life, although it
may appear to have Part 11 and
maybe even Part 111 is simply lit-
tle more than the sun shining for
a brief moment.
In Part 1, Foreman, much like
an actor with his charismatic im-
age drops Moorer to the canvas.
But this isn't the movies and 1
believe Part 11 won't even hap-
pen...
Keys locks up `B' title for Exeter
Local teams did well at Bill Batten Tournament
Scott Keys
...sparks peewees
EXETER - In what may be one
of the most dramatic come -from -
behind wins in Exeter Minor Hock-
ey Association history.
Scott Keys scored twice to help
the ;Exeter Legion Peewees beat
Hagersville 3-2 on Sunday to win
the 'B' title of the Bill Batten Me-
morial Tournament.
With 1:35 left in regulation time,
Keys was set up by Chad Monteith
on a well executed two -on -one. A
minute later, with the game looking
as though it may go into overtime,
the duo linked up again.
Following a scoreless first period,
Hagersville's Marc Almond hit the
post early in the second and Exet-
er's Jett Campbell was stopped on a
breakaway by Hagersville defense -
man Wally Lawless who came out
of:po where to make the play.

past Hagersville goalie Dan Ful-
som.
With Monteith in the box, Matt
Montague tied it up and midway
through the middle frame, Chris
Mitchell got a shot away which
st,rcened Exeter goalie Ryan Sul-
livan.
Keys started his magic early as
he almost set up a goal earlier in
the third period with some fancy
stick handling behind the net.
Exeter got to the 'B' final after a
5-4 overtime Toss to Seaforth Fri-
day night in which Jason Grenicr
scored three goals and Monteith
scored once and set up two others.
A big 7-1 win over Aylmer put
Exeter into the 'B' game. Keys had
two goals in that win while Camp-
bell netted the hat trick and Grcnicr
and Monteith also connected.
Shutout for Hilliard: "Jesse,
Jesse, Jesse" was the chant from the
Delhi fans as goalie Jesse Hilliard
turned away at least 30 shots to
back his team to a 1-0 shutout win
over Dresden to win the 'A' final.
With a little help from his posts,
Hilliard heard the metal clang four
times behind him and he thanked
his posts late in the game when
Dresden's Scott Travis rang the
iron.
The only goal of this game came
with 1:07 left in the second period
when Dresden goalie Derrick Casi-
er just couldn't hang onto a shot
and Ryan Howard was there to
push it over the line.
Delhi got to the final as they
opened with a 2-1 overtime win
over Aylmer and then got by Sea -
forth 3-1.
Novice Waxers goalie Justin Hayter stops the puck and a
Parkhill player in the 'B' final game.
Hayter hot as Waxers
win novice `B' title
The young goalie was
sharp in the 2-1 win
over Mitchell
EXETER - Goalie Justin Hayter
made some key caves on Sunday as
he helped the Exeter Novice Wax-
ers win the 'B' title of the eight -
team novice division at the Bill
Batten Tourndmcnt on the week-
end.
Exeter edged the Parkhill Pan-
thers 2-1 in the 'B' title game after
beating Ilderton 3-2 in the 'B' semi-
final contest.
Against Parkhill, Hayter was test-
ed early as he had to come up with
a big save on a backhander on a
Parkhill powerplay attempt.
With just 2:09 left in the first pe-
riod, Panthers forward Steve Poore,
went in and let go with a quick shot
which beat Hayter.
Cam Murray was set up by Jor-
dan Darling and the Waxers tied
the game 2:40 into the second pe-
riod. It was almost 2-1 for Exeter as
captain Justin Fields went down the
left side but was stopped by Park-
hill goalie Kyle Rupp.
Late in the game, Tony Regier
picked the top right hand corner
over Rupp to score the winning
goal for the Waxers.
Exeter reached the final fol-
lowing the win over Ilderton which
saw Murray, Costas Kollias and Ja-
mie Rasenberg connect for the win-
ners. The Waxers lost their opcncr
Friday night, 5-0 to Mitchell.
Great weekend for Mitchell:
Mitchell's minor hockey . associa-
tion got a big shot in the arm at this
year's Exeter's tournament as they
not only made it to the Atom 'A' fi-
nal but won the Novice 'A' title.
In the novice championship
game, Kyle Verbcme had two goals
and an assist in a 4-1 win over Har-
row. Also scoring were Tyler Viv-
ian and Patrick McClure while An-
thony Gaudette had the lone goal
for Harrow.
Stephen knocked out: The Ste-
phen novices won their first game
4-2 over Ilderton as Brad Schenk
had two goals with one each from
Jesse McCann and Kris Finkbeiner.
However they were sent home fol-
lowing a slim 3-2 loss to Mitchell
in which Schenk and Reid O'Neil
scored.
Somewhere under this pile is Exeter peewee forward Chad Monteith. He was involved in a
scuffle in front of the Seaforth goalie in Friday night's game. Ready to help out is Wayne Cole
(19).
Sonics super in `A' final
Stephen captain Brayden
Lord had a goal and three
assists to spark the win
EXETER - The Sonics were just super.
Sunday night at the South Huron Recreation Cen-
tre, the Stephen Township Atom Sonics came from
behind to beat Mitchell 6-4 to capture the atom "A'
division of the fifth annual Bill Batten Memorial
Hockey Tournament.
Gaining a birth in the final after a draining over-
time game against Seaforth which went down to
three skaters aside, the Sonics had to come -from -
behind to beat Mitchell.
The scoring opened when Stephen's Scott Davies
went up high on Mitchell netmindcr Robert Eckcrt
just 1:34 into the game on a goal set up by Biian
Dixon. Peter Schoonderwocrd quickly tied it up for
Mitchell.
Just a minute into the middle frame, Mitchell took
a one -goal lead when Brad Stacey connected but
Brent Tatara managed to trickle one through a sca
of legs to tie the score once again.
Stephen trailed 4-2 after two periods of play but
'came out flying in the third. Captain Brayden Lord
lcd the offence with a goal and three assists while
Davies scored twice with singles from Tatara,
Schroeder and Jeff Rollings.
The Sonics scored three goals in three minutes to
clinch the outstanding effort which saw Dixon and
Schroeder each set up two goals.
Mitchell made it to the final of the eight -team di-
vision after they blanked Mooretown 3-0 and then
got by Wheatley -Leamington 3-1.
Stcphcn opened the three-day long tournament
with a big 6-1 win over Exeter. Pfaff scored twice
in that one with singles off the sticks of Colin Saud-
er, Ken Tilley, Jesse Schroeder and Dixon.
Scoring for the Exeter Atom Broncos was Mike
Kerslake.
Stephen's second game was a lot closer as they
took on the very tough team from Seaforth. Lord
netted two goals and set up another with the other
two coming from Pfaff.
After regulation time which ended in a 3-3 draw
the game went into overtime in which they played a
five-minute overtime before the goalies were elim-
inated and they played five aside, four aside and
then three aside.
Broncos take early exit: The defending tourna-
ment champion Broncos sputtered this year as they
lost their opener 6- I to Stephen and were eliminated
when they fell 7-3 to Thedford.
Against Thedford, Kevin Overholt had two goals
