Local woman named president
MOUNT I3RYDGES - Dolores Shapton of RR 1,
Exeter was named president of the London Area Worn -
en's Institute at a recent one day convention in Mount
Brydges.
Shapton, a member of the Crediton Women's Insti-
tute and a past president of the Huron South District re-
ceived the gavel and president's pin
from outgoing president Margaret
Dale at the close of the convention.
In the president's address, Dale
told the 300 ladies in attendance
"ideas don't work unless we do.
Family is the most important part of
life, facing continuing changes, hut
we are adapting as always. We need
policies that support families and we
need to communicate."
She has a video on the history of
Women's Institutes of Ontario, span-
ning nearly 100 years. It can be oh-
tained by calling her.
Donna Russett, president of the
Federated Women's Institutes of On-
tario reported a capital fund of
$321,000, which is still short of the
target, but if all the branches in Ontario donated all the
money given to other projects for one year, the objec-
tive would be reached.
New branches
During the past year five new branches have been
formed. A training workshop will be held in January.
Areas are encouraged to send representatives.
The ACWW Conference will be held in New Zea-
land in February and Ontario will be sending delegates.
Read the resolutions in home and Country and let the
delegates know how you feel about them.
Chris McNaughton of Kippen won the Dorothy E.
Fletcher scholarship. Chris is attending McMaster Uni-
versity studying Natural Sciences. The Marian Pardy
scholarship went to Pam Bennett. Both girls had writ-
ten an essay on "My wish for Canada."
A skit, "Telephones then and now" was presented by
Embro, West Zorra W.I. St. Paul's W.I. did a skit on a
newcomer's reaction to being invited to attend a Wom-
en's Institute meeting and how she enjoyed it and was
looking forward to going again.
The Provincial Directors gave their
reports in the form of a skit which
was written by Laurine McIntosh.
Present artifacts
A presentation of a metronome, an
1890 agricultural book and an old
typewriter was made by the St. Pauls
W.I. in honour of Norman and Jean
Coulthard. Mrs. Coulthard said she
joined the Braemar W.I. in 1936 be-
fore being married. Her memories in-
clude attending her first London Area
Conference, which was held at Hotel
London.
Guest speaker Peggy Knapp enti-
tled her topic, "Me and my sisters"
telling about many connections with
women throughout the world through
ACWW and seven million women rep -

resented.
Knapp talked about joining her first Institute and tell-
ing of one of the early years when 14 babies were horn
in the group. These new mothers planned programs
that reflected their own needs. They laughed, celebrat-
ed their pluses and dried each other's tears and took
time to plan fund raisers, write letters, prepare briefs
and lobby.
Canada will sponsor a woman from Zambia in Africa
to go to next February's convention in Christchurch,
New Zealand. The women in Zambia have worked
hard to raise money for accommodation, food and reg-
istration and Canadians will provide the plant fare. A
donation box was on hand for contributions for that
project.
