Exeter's secondary school - a lot of
those become student -athletes.
For the past 14 years, South Hu-
ron has been offering a weekly bas-
ketball camp in the fall. It runs for
10 weeks and there arc other rea-
sons than becoming Panthers that
the over 90 youngsters attend.
"A lot of them will try out (tor
varsity teams) but the main focus is
to give them an alternative of some-
thing to do." said South Huron
coach Terry O'Rourke who runs the
program.
Every Wednesday, beginning at
7:30 p.m., the stain gym at the
school is loud with the shouting of
instructions, the odd whistle and
the never-ending sound of a has-
kethall hitting the wooden floor.
"We cover all the basic funda-
mentals of the sport. They get a lit-
tle each week and th' y get two
games a week," said O'Rourke.
High school can he a pretty in-
timidating place for many who are
coming into Grade 9. O'Rourke's
program, geared for those between
grades 6-8, is also set up to help
them feel •more comfortable.
"It also introduces a lot of them
to the high school."
The players at the basketball
camp are divided into different
teams and the boys' teams are given
names such as Raptors and Lakers,
named after National Basketball
Association teams while the girls'
teams are Arkansas, Kansas,
McGill and other university teams
in both Canada and the United
States.
O'Rourke explained that when he
selects the teams, he makes sure he
takes players from different
schools. In other words, it also
works as a social outlet and gives
the players more exposure to those
from other schools.
"We don't keep score of the
games. We don't have a winning or
a losing team."
Last Wednesday, the players
were broken up into various groups
for -drills and also had a chance to
view an. -NBA videotape prior to
playing their games.
"The instructors are all senior
basketball players either past or
present." said O'Rourke whose as-
sistants at the camp include Pat Du-
charme and Scot Russell who have
both played for O'Rourke in the
past.
Russell has stayed very involved
in the varsity basketball program at
South Huron as he now serves as
an assistant coach to O'Rourke on
the senior girls haskethall team
which is 5-1 in Huron Conference
play.
Basketball. although invented by
a Canadian, has always been more
of an American sport. However,
with the Toronto Raptors entering
the NBA next year, the popularhy,
even at the local level, could be in-
creasing.
"More kids are aware of it, more
arc playing in the backyards. When
we started this, there weren't that
many nets up around town," said
O'Rourke.
Does the program work, is it suc-
cessful? Giving 90 elementary-
school aged a sport alternative is a
good idea and as far as teaching the
skills, last Wednesday the South
Huron midget girls' team beat Cen-
tral Huron 54-21.
