Hawks now
have secret
ingredient
You can't call him a rookie
and it's pretty tough to call him a
veteran of the Exeter Hawks.
But most opposing forwards
will no doubt be calling him Mr.
Campbell by the end of the sea-
son.
Friday night, the Hawks beat
the Lambeth Lancers 12-3 and
defenseman Joel Campbell had
four assists. Not bad considering
it's his first game of the year and-
he's only skated with the Hawks
a couple of times after a lengthy
layoff.
I pick him as the Hawks num-
ber one star from Friday's game
because he not only set up four
goals, but he hit the post, dished
out a few timely hits and, when-
ever he was on the ice, con-
trolled the tempo of the game.
That only comes with ex-
perience and Campbell's got a
lot of it.
The past two years he has
been a Junior 'B' all-star de-
fenseman with the Waterloo Si -
skins, last year helping them to
an OHA championship. Two
years before that he was with
Cambridge Jr. B Winter Hawks.,
"We won an OHA champion-
ship and I said that was enough.
I haven't been home in five
years," said Campbell after Fri-
day's huge win.
He is not a rookie because five
years ago when he was a second
year peewee and in grade eight,
he was an Exeter Hawk. It was
no secret he was going on to
bigger and better things.
But he wanted to come home.
play for the Hawks and go to
South Huron high school. He
also wanted to play for his cou-
sin, coach Dave Revington.
The Hawks have been waiting
a few weeks for his arrival and
Campbell said, "I hadn't made
up my mind to do it."
He didn't play a lot of the third
period as all six Exeter defense -
men got their share of ice time.
Campbell is still trying to work
himself into shape.
"It's been a long time. 1 wasn't
rushing with the puck as much."
With him, the Hawks have got
someone to quarterback their
powerplay which was an in-
gredient lacking the last couple
of years.
The addition of a Junior 'B'
all-star, last year's leading scorer
Shayne Robinson hack and a
great team attitude already, I fig-
ure this is the best Hawks team 1
have seen in the five years I've
been in town.
Hockey fans should mark De-
cember 30 on their calendar be-
cause that's when the Lakers
come to town and it will be a
great game.

Hawks add Campbell, pound Lancers 12-3
The offensive depth continues to build as record 5-2

EXETER - Coming into Friday
night's OHA Junior Development
League game in Exeter, the visiting
Lambeth Lancers had only given
up 18 goals in six games for a 3.00
goals against average, best in thc
west division.
However, the Hawks don't pay
much attention to the oppositions'
statistics and they raised the Lanc-
ers average way up, winning a
whopping 12-3.
The win, combined with a 9-4
loss to the host Belmont Bombers
on Saturday, has the Hawks in sec-
ond place in the west division with
a 5-2 mark.
It's the most one-sided score in
Officials were busy Friday night in Exeter breaking up a scuffle
along the glass during Exeter's 12-3 win.
the west thus far and the Hawks got
a very balanced scoring attack as
second -year centre Nathan Burns
had three goals with two each from
Mark Livermore, Shayne Robinson
and Sean McCann and singles from
rookies Marty DeBruyn and Jeff
Glavin and veteran Ray Cousineau.
Despite the score, the Hawks got
off to a bad start as goalie Chris
Lyndon had two shots on him in
the first 10 seconds and the Lancers
were up 1-0 just 49 seconds into
the game.
"We have a slow start pretty well
every game, 1 don't know why,"
said Exeter coach Dave Revington.
But once the Exeter scoring ma-
chine kicked into high gear, they
were up 4-1 after the first period
and held a commanding 7-2 lead af-
ter 40 minutes.
"Their goalie let in some weak
shots. We were really up tonight
and we came to play," said Hawks'
captain McCann who is once again
among the top scorers on the tcam.
When asked if this was the best
Exeter team he has seen in the three
years he's been a Hawk, McCann
hesitated to comment, but did point
out a couple of weaknesses.
"No one is really used to playing
together. We can't get up for the
first couple of shifts."
However, it is what the final
score reads not the first couple of
shifts and as far as playing togeth-
er, it appears that won't take much
time.
Lots of bodies: With the return
of Robinson and the pleasant sur-
prise of defenseman Joel Campbell
on the scene, the Hawks have the
luxury of sitting out some pretty
good, players.
Nql dressed Friday were defense -
man son McBride along with for-
wards Steve Farquhar, Chad Gill-
filan and Nathan Blight.
The Hawks looked very good Fri-
day night and they are very solid
throughout their lineup. Revington
had Burns in the middle of Jeff
Glavin and Robinson and another
top notch trio was McCann flanked
by Livermore and Kennedy.
Campbell's return is a real bless-
ing as he can rush with the puck,
set up plays and give out the big hit
when needed.
"Joel brings experience, the pow-
erplay is so much better," said
McCann. "We have got two good
scoring lines."
"He's (Campbell) played Junior
'B' for four years and experience
alone will take you a long way,"
said Revington.
Pretty goals: While thc Hawks
put 12 up on the board, two of them
were real beauties to watch.
Just 5:01 into the second period,
Burns went racing up the middle
and rookie blueliner Mark Bell hit
him with a perfect pass. Burns
burst in and went up high on Lamb-
eth goalie John Finlay.
With 24 seconds left in the mid-
dle frame, McCann went in, didn't
pass into the middle but waited a
split second for DeBruyn to come
into the play where the rookie made
no mistake.
The game got quite ugly with
about eight minutes left to go when
Kennedy was cruising around the
the Lambeth goal and Finlay got
very upset, taking his stick and
two -handing the Exeter forward.
Kennedy was ejected when he and
Trevor Nott got into a tussle and
Finlay was given a match penalty
which means he could be out for
three or four games.
Bombers 9. Hawks 4
This one was over pretty quick as
the host Bombers went up 5-1 in
the first period of Saturday night's
game.
Scoring for the Hawks were Ken-
nedy, Corriveau, McCann and
Blight.
Darren Kints stared in net but
shared the duties all night with
Lyndon as Revington played, "mu-
sical goalies."

Close but not close enough for Irish
Lucan can't seem to break into the win column
By Fred Groves
T -A staff
LUCAN - You've heard thc say-
ing - close only counts in horse-
shoes.
Well, the Lucan Irish aren't play-
ing horseshoes, they are playing
hockey. Mind you, the luck that
rubs off of a horseshoe is what th'
Irish need right now.
Last Wednesday night they los:
5-4 to visiting Belmont Bombers in
OHA Junior Development League
action. It was the second game in a
row that the Irish have lost by one
goal.
Still in the basement of the west
division with a 0-6-1 record, the
Irish are desperate for a win.
"After games we've (coaching
staff) been meeting for an hour.
We're trying to come up with some
answers. We need a win real bad,"
said coach Scott Bogart.
The past two games the Irish
have been doing everything near
perfect, but just not good enough as
come the end of 60 minutes, they
are on the short ena of the score-
board.
Wednesday the Irish got great ef-
forts out of veterans Steve -Mat-
thews, who had two assists, and
Derek Greenlee. Hopefully some of
that spark will rub off on some of
the others.
"The guys are.still positive," said
Bogart. "We have to get consistcnt
and hungry for the puck."
One player hungry to get to the
puck on Wednesday was rookie
Steve Hudson who scored a pair of
goals while newcomer Christian
Cricl and Gcorge Stephens also
connected.
This is the worst start the Irish

Letters to the editor
Don't write off
the Irish
Dear Sports Editor:
Even though we are winless in our first seven starts, I definitely
would not be writing off the seaspn.
With the exception of the blowout in Exeter, we've been in every
game and could easily, with a break here and there, have a 6-1
record.
I am well aware that there arc a lot of people around this town who
are criticizing some of the team's play and coaching decisions but I
assure you as the season progresses, we will improve and that drastic
changes which some people want, will be, in my opinion, devastating
to this team's makeup.
This team's character, along with the coaching staff is second to
none. When it comes to working hard and never giving up, we defi-
nitely will be a force to be reckoned with as the season progresses.
Pat Ryan,
Manager, Lucan Irish
have had for several years and
looking for win number one still
may be in the distance. Lucan had a
bit of a break as they didn't have a
weekend game but tonight host the
Mt. Brydgcs Bulldogs.
"We just can't seem to tum the
corner yet. I don't know if it's a cor-
ner or a mountain," said Bogart.
• Back -and -forth game: Wednes-
day's game was a see -saw affair but
late in the third period the Irish
seemed to have things well in hand.
The game was tied and Belmont's
Tim Hewbank was in the penalty
box for spearing,
But Bombers' veteran Jamie
Dance broke up the middle and
