EXETER - There are no more big
exhibition tournaments for the
South Huron District High School
girls field hockey team this year as
they are totally concentrating on
the immediate challenge directly in
front of them.
The Panthers, two-time de-
fending provincial champions, will
be under the microscope the next
few weeks as they begin their de-
fence of the OFSAA crown.
Thursday they will host the Hu-
ron -Perth Conference semi-finals
and then Tuesday will no doubt be
in the finals. South Huron is going
after its 12th consecutive confer-
ence title and its a safe bet they'll
win.
Last Tuesday they stumbled a lit-
tle bit but still managed to beat vis-
iting Mitchell 2-0 on a pair of goals
by leading scorer Danielle Miners.
"We had a good talk after the
Mitchell game and talked about
morale and strategy," said South
Huron coach Jim Workman.
When you continue to win and
are undefeated in your own confer-
ence, its tough to stay focused. Eve-
ry year at this time, the Panthers
have to regroup a little and toughen
up on themselves.
"I'm hoping we'll stay positive.
It's tough when you keep winning,"
said Workman.
No offence: All year long the
South Huron senior girls basketball
team has been,. putting a lot of
Pplpts,lpp An, .tho.,bga(d but that
wasn't the case Friday afternoon in
Parkhill.
At the North Middlesex Maraud-
ers tournament, the Panthers were
pounded 49-5 by the hosts.
"It was just one of those games,
nothing went in," said South Huron
coach Terry O'Rourke. "They (Ma-
rauders) were quick and we
couldn't handle the pressure."
The second game of the tourna-
ment saw the Panthers improve a
little but they still came up. short -
this time 52-30 to Sarnia St. Clair.
However, the seniors who post an
overall record of 9-5, sell remain
undefeated in Huron Conference
action as they topped visiting F.E.
Madill Mustangs 52-28 last
Wednesday.
The Mustangs put a lot of pres-
sure on the South Huron guards but
once they were able to get the ball
up to Chrissy McInnes, Tara Pep-
per and Candace Miller there was
no stopping that trio from scoring.
South Huron had a 11-2 lead at
the end of tt,e first quarter and
whin Miller banked one off the
glass with four seconds left in the
half, the hosts had a huge 32-12
lead.
In exhthtuon play on Thursday,
the Panthers beat visiting Central
Huron and St. Marys. South Huron
will try to keep their undefeated
league record in tact as they travel
to Clinton to take on the Redmen
on Wednesday.
Juniors struggling: In junior ac-
tion last Wednesday, the Panthers
couldn't get past the Mustangs as
they were beaten 51-24. Julie
Rboseboom had eight points for the
hosts while Jayne Ballantyne netted
six.
South Huron trailed 16-6 at the
end of eight minutes and it was 38-
21' after three quarters of play.
