Orchards in Lu - left and owner Photos and story by Catherine O'Brien T -A staff LUCAN - The apple could very well be one of the most popular natural foods around. It's one of few fruits that can boast being able to keep the doctor away; and it was chosen over all others by a major corpputer company looking for a name. It's no wonder that 500 million pounds are harvested every year in Ontario. For growers it's an es- timated $42 million a year business, according to Foodland Ontario. For the province, the apple is particularly special, since one third of Canada's entire apple crop is grown here. In fact some 32, 000 acres of land in Ontario is oc- cupied by apple orchards. That may be why so many peo- ple venture out at this time of the year to 'Pick Your Own' orchards - they too want a piece of the action. The past few weeks have been a busy time for apple orchards as schools and families plan outings to the orchards to experience the apple in its natural setting. Just down the road at Apple - Dale Orchards, owners John Goo - bolt and Kathryn Munn report a busy season as workers and vis- itors take part in the harvest. At their 28 acre orchard there are 11,000 trees to pick from with sev- eral varieties of apples available. If you have a favorite kind of ap- p1Q.; be it McIntosh, Red or golden Delicious, Idared, Northern Spy, Spartan or Empire - the picking times may vary. "The peak picking time for the majority of apples is around Thanksgiving," Godbolt said. In an average year, Godbolt said his orchard can produce about 14,000 bushels of apples. These are sent to local supermarkets, used for apple cider or they are sent away to be processed into ap- ple juice. And if apples aren't you're fa- vorite fruit, Godbolt still rec- ommends coming out to the or- chard. "It's a great excuse for being out- doors," he said. 7 Kelsey Long of the Tinker Tots Nursery School in Hensall checks out the produce at Apple -Dale Orchards while below, workers Rose Cunning- ham unningham (left) and Sharon Hum- phrey busy themselves in the orchard.
