Parking officer resigns
Zurich is looking to hire
again for the controversial
pay -per -ticket position
ZURICH - The parking ticket debate continues in
Zurich. The village accepted the resignation of deputy
bylaw enforcement officer Chris Littlechild Thursday
evening, and had to decide whether to hire a new one.
"I think it will be a hard position to fill, with all the
controversy going on," said councillor Barb Jeffrey.
Since Zurich hired the part time officer to write up
parking tickets, the village office has been barraged
with complaints. Despite the complaints, council has
insisted that it must strictly enforce the new no -parking
zones near the main intersection for traffic safety.
Reeve Bob Fisher said if the position is to be filled,
perhaps the system of paying the officer per ticket
should be changed.
"I think we should do something about this 'quota
system'," said Fisher. "It does smack of that."
"How do you go about paying this person?" he
asked.

Community
Living craft
sale Saturday
The second annual
event has extended
hours, more exhibitors
DASHWOOD - Extended hours
arc aimed at relieving some of the
"jam packed" atmosphere seen at
last year's Craft and Bake Sale at
Community Living South Huron.
The sale, which now runs from 9
a.m. to 5 p.m. this Saturday at the
Community Living South Huron
workshop in Dashwood, is the sec-
ond annual fundraising event for
the Partners of Community Living,
a support group for parents and
family members of people who are
mentally handicapped.
The group's goal is to raise
$2,500 to help fund its programs,
including guest speakers, and work-
shops.
"It allows us to he self-
sufficient," explained Donna Greb.
Over 30 vendors arc planned for
this year's event, who will have for
sale a variety of gift items from
woodcrafts to children's clothes and
collector's dolls. All the exhibitors
arc from the South Huron area.
A hake table will have treats pre-
pared by organization members, as
well as from the ARC Industries
hake shop. A lunch will also be
served in the cafeteria for show vis-
itors.
Raffle tickets are also being sold
on the chance of winning one of
four donated prizes: a pillow quilt,
a pine shelf, a trio of cherubs, and a
broom doll.
Admission to the craft and hake
sale is $1.
"How else would you do it though?" asked Jeffrey,
noting it is not a job that can be paid by the hour. "It's
the only way you have [to pay)."
Fisher suggested road superintendent/bylaw officer
Dennis Regier could do the job intermittently, but
councillor Keith Semple said if tickets are written one
day, and not another people will complain. Fisher said
it is like speeding, and you never know when you'll he
caught.
Councillor Dwayne Laporte said that Littlechild's re-
muneration should have been declining as people
learned not to violate the parking restrictions. Acting
clerk Sharon Bak'; then provided records showing Lit-
tlechild was paid $220 for tickets written in April,
dropping to $105 to July, to $60 to September.
"And she treated everybody the same," said Baker.
"She did an excellent job," said Fisher, to which
council all agreed.
Council eventually made a motion to regretfully ac-
cept Littlechild's resignation, and to advertise the posi-
tion as before.
"I wouldn't do it," said Baker. "I get all the letters."

Call for food bank support
"I know I would drop in a couple
of cans or boxes when
I went shopping."
Dear Editor:
While shopping in London a couple of weeks ago
I saw almost every place I went, bins were set out
for the food bank.
Now that we have a food bank here in Exeter it
would be nice if some of the stores did the same.
I know 1 would drop in a couple of cans or boxes
when I went shopping.
I know that I don't bother now because I would
not walk up to the food bank with just a couple of
things.
I have talked to some friends and they say the
same thing.
So how about it grocery stores? How about a trial
run? If it doesn't work out at least we tried.
