Firefighters to
get special
plate stickers
TORONTO - The province has
issued special licence plate stickers
to firefighters who respond to
emergencies with their personal ve-
hicles, Transportation Minister
Gilles Pouliot said last Friday.
"Thanks to these stickers, police
officers at the scene of a fire will be
able to identify which vehicles be-
long to volunteer and full-time fire-
fighters - and allow them clear ac-
cess so they can do their job," said
Pouliot.
Ontario fire chiefs will only dis-
tribute str'cketts-ti6' Srefighters who
use their own vehicles to respond to
emergencies. The stickers are
green, with a white Maltese Cross
the symbol for volunteer firefigh$
ers. The sticker will be affixed to
the bottom left corner of the front
vehicle plate.
"The sticker docs not give fire-
fighters any special privileges -
they must still obey all traffic
laws," said Pouliot. "But I hope
motorists will learn to recognize it
and do their best not to block or ob-
struct vehicles that volunteers may
need at any time."
With the support of the Ontario
Association of Fire Chiefs, North-
umberland MPP Joan Fawcett in-
troduced a bill to issue the special
plate stickers. They were then de-
veloped in partnership with the
Firefighters' Association of Ontario
and the ministries of Transporta-
tion, Solicitor General and Correc-
tional Services.
Fire chiefs will ensure the stick-
ers are removed from vehicles if
their owners cease to be firefight-
ers.
Zurich
renews
subdivision
agreement
ZURICH - Village council has re-
newed the plans for a subdivision
first envisioned in the 1970s, but
has still to see a house built.
The renewal of the draft plan of
survey for a subdivision for Mario
Sirotic Real Estate Ltd. of Ancaster
has become something of a yearly
ritual for Zurich council, since the
original agreement was first signed
in 1975.
Reeve Bob Fisher commented on
council's yearly duty, despite seeing
no development on the property.
"On the other hand, we don't want
to cut off our noses to spite our
face, because one day he might put
something there," said Fisher, not-
ing that Sirotic had money invested
in the property, and would have to
start his subdivision process again if
the agreement tapsed.
Sirotic sent a letter to council ex-
plaining he had been hospitalized
from November 1993 to April 1994.
Council agreed to extend the
agreement for another year - to No-
vember 1995.
