Closing down VON won't save
$90 million insists organization
Study outlining savings is inaccurate they say
STRATFORD - The Victorian Order of Nurses who provide 50 percent
of the nursing home support services in Huron County, has expressed
grave concern over the data contained in a report prepared by Price Water-
house and released by the Senior's Alliance. The report claims that $90
million dollars can be saved in administration costs if long established
agencies such as VON, Red Cross and St. Elizabeth's Visiting Nursing
were closed down in favour of a Government mandate Multi -Service
Agency.
The VON say they are supportive of the government's initiatives of long
term care reform and a coordinated model that provides one -stop -
shopping for users in-home services as efficiently as possible, but are un-
willing to see the system built on inaccurate and misleading data which
will undermine competent planning of the system.
Many of the clients VON cares for in Huron County are vulnerable and
in our haste to move to a new system, we must take care not to damage a'
system that has served the people of Huron County well for 80 years, said
Perth -Huron VON executive director Lynne McDonald.

How do strains of flu get their names? Usually
it's from the place where the first breakout oc-
curred. In 1918-19, the "Spanish" flu killed 20
million people. Remember the "Asian" flu of
1957? It killed 70,000 Americans.
The flu virus is usually spread through direct person to person
contact via coughing and sneezing. the virus can survive on ob-
jects for a short time and can be picked up by another person
touching those objects.
After becoming infected, a person starts to feel the flu symp-
toms in 2-3 days and from this stage are considered contagious
for 3-4 days after.
Fortunately, today we have excellent vaccines which provide
good protection against the flu. The vaccines are made from "in-
activated" or "killed" virus strains so you cannot get the flu by
being vaccinated.
Flu vaccine should be given yearly to high risk patients... those
with chronic lung or cardiovascular disease, diabetes, kidney dis-
ease and all persons over 65.
