EXETER - Surprise, surprise the
South Huron District High School
Panthers senior girls basketball
team head into today's Huron Con-
ference game against visiting F.E.
Madill, undefeated in league play.
Last Monday they travelled to
Goderich and beat the host Vikings
37-26 thanks in pan to thc out-
standing 17 point effort of forward
Candace Miller.
"Wc played very well, we just did
our thing and played good de-
fence," said Panthers coach Tcrry
O'Rourke.
He was in New Zealand last year
so he didn't get a chance to predict
what kind of team the Vikings, or
any other team in the conference
for that matter, would have.
O'Rourke expected the Vikings to
be one of the superior teams in the
Huron Conference but for now the
3-0 Panthers arc on top of the heap.
Skating Club will
offer new programs
CanSkate and CanFigure Skate
have been added at Exeter Club
EXETER - The Exeter Figure Skating Club is trying something
new this ycar and so far, it's being mct with positive results.
Last Monday, over 50 children aged seven -and -under were on the
ice at the South Huron Recreation Centre enrolled in the CanSkate A
program.
"This is for pre -beginners, beginners, elementary and basic," ex-
plained club president Brenda Hern. "It's all on what they can do. A
pre -beginner can stand up and skate from one side to the next."
The ice was very busy as instructors were being patient and the
skaters it looked, were having a bit of fun as they tried to get their
feet in motion.
"We might move the basics up into the next time slot," said Hern.
"It was pretty crowded, we have a lot of new skaters."
There are over 100 who are in the club this year and Hern ex-
plained some of the changes which will hopefully be for the best.
After CanSkate A, the next level is CanSkate B followed by nov-
ice, then CanFigure Skate and finally intermediate. CanFigure Skate
could become very popular this winter.
"We haven't had it in a few years. It's the same principle, you pass
and get badges."
The skaters will be tested the same way as they do with the inter-
mediate but the CanFigure Skate group will not have as many pri-
vate sessions which will cut down on the cost for parents.
"You don't get the individuality but you get the essentials. Some
still like to have their own private lessons. I think it's going to work
out well."
Instructor Jennifer McNeilly has a talk with the youngsters.
That record was attained fol-
lowing last Wednesday's slim 41-
38 win over hosting Seaforth.
"Once again 1 haven't seen them
in two years," said O'Rourke. "It's a
smaller gym and we were down 15-
4 right off the bat but we made
some adjustments."
The South Huron juniors beat
Seaforth on Wednesday and the
midgets continued to show how
powerful offensively they arc as
they won by 40 points.
On Wednesday, the Panthers will
host Madill and then on Thursday
the seniors will play a round-robin
mini tournament with visiting Cen-
tral Huron and St. Mary's. The
North Middlesex invitational Tour-
nament is on thc weekend.
Field hockey
still on top
While the senior girls basketball
team is keeping up with some win-
ning ways, the field hockey team
looks as though it is on its way to
its 12th consecutive Huron -Perth
Hawks -Irish

It was a shorthanded goal and the
other, netted by Wil Giles came on
the powerplay.
Bulldogs 7, Hawks 4
This wasn't the best effort the
Hawks have given this ycar as they
were trailing 4-0 aftcr the first pe-
riod and 5-0 just 10 seconds into
the middle frame.
"It was a lousy start. We came
back and learned a few things and
it was a little different lineup," said
Revington.
Exeter's special teams continue to
do a great job as Kennedy scored
shorthanded and on the powerplay,.
Livermore scorcd on a powerplay
and Marty DeBruyn, netting his
first Hawk goal connected short-
handed.

Panthers now have an unblemished
7-0 record and have scored 36
goals while allowing just one
against St. Marys.
Huron -Perth scmi-finals arc on
October 20 and the final is five
days later.
"If we win (semi-finals) it will be
here in Exeter," said coach Jim
Workman of the H -P finals. "WOS-
SA is also hcrc on October 28-29."
Overall the two-time defending
provincial champions, looking to
"three -peat," arc 26-1-3 which in-
cludes shortened tournament
games.
Against Central, South Huron's
leading scorer Danielle Mincrs
notched two, with one each from
Shawna Rowe, Cara Gardner and
Toni DcJong.
Miners had a pair about 30 sec-
onds apart against Northwestern
while Rowe, Lisa Hodge, Gardner,
Brcnyn Baynham, DeJong and Jana
Wcbstcr also scored.
Webster is. usually the goalie but
Amanda Glavin got thc shutout in
ti
the cage against Northwestern.
"She (Webster) said could I try
and 1 said alright," said Workman
of his goalie willing to switch posi-
tions. Webster plays goal not only
in field hockey but ringette and soc-
cer.
"There wasn't a lot of pressure
and it gives her a chance to go out
and see what is going on," added
Workman.
Tuesday the Panthers were in
Mitchell and on Thursilay will trav-
el to Listowel.
Panthers' Kim Farquhar battles for the ball against Stratford
