DEVELOPMENT
LEAGUE
By Fred Groves
T -A staff
The 1994-95 O11A Junior De-
velopment League season is here
and this could be a very intersting
year what with some big changes.
New coaches in Exeter, Lucan and
Mt. Brydges and 13 -of -18 goalies
who slap on the pads for new
teams.
Pt. Stanley Lakers have come
over from the west division where
they only lost two games but bowed
to now league rivals Mitchell who
won their second straight O11A
crown.
Alvinston Flyers have moved up
To. - Jiinior C' whlile Si:- -George
Dukes are the new team in the east.
Predicted finishing for this year:
Pt. Stanley, Exctcr, Lucan, Mitch-
ell, Sea forth, Lambeth, North Mid-
dlesex, Mt. Brydges, Belmont.
MITCHELL HAWKS:
Last year: 35-3-2 (1st)
Coach: Jack Chaffe
Who will keep the puck tut of
the net for the two-time defending
champion Mitchell Hawks?
With last year's rookie sensations
Darcy Ballantyne (2.50 GAA) and
Elliott Faust (2.63 GAA) off to
bigger and better things, the Hawks
will have to look for replacements
Craig Murrell from St. Marys ban-
tams and Adam Agar from Sea-
forth's OMHA midget champs to
do the job.
The big -plus is that last year's
leading scorer Rob Boville (36-32-
68) is back, as is centre Craig
Quipp (13-24-37). They, along with
Jon Schiedcl who played for Exeter
and Jason Parsons (Woodstock Jr.
C) will be the big offensive threats.
Kory Dietz is gone and his 33 goals
will be tough to replace.
On the blueline captain Jeff
Smith who had 21 goals is gone
and Jeremy Smith mil Denny Ho-
ran will have to pick 6 the slack.
PT. STANLEY LAKERS
Last year: 36-2-2 (1st in east)
Coach: Marty Carroll
After taking a two ycar leave
from the west, the Lakers arc back
and most teams in the west think
this could be the toughest team .i
the division.
Pt Stanley only lost two games
last year'and made it to the OHA fi-
nals where they were beaten by
Mitchell. The big leader on the
team will once again be Scott
Faulkner who led the cast in scor-
ing with 111 points including 53
goals.
Faulkner was followed in divi-
sion scoring by teammates Mark
Steele (43-61-104) and Mike Rush
(40-48-88) who arc also back. The
Lakers return 11 players including
the division's second best average
goaltending wise in Brad Joworski
(3.20).
He'll be joined by rookie Shawn
Scarlett while former Lucan de-
fenseman Jamie Hicks will be an
impact player. The Lakcrs have
also added a couple of former Jun-
ior '13' players which will help.
LUCAN IRISH:
Last year: 27-11-2 (2nd)
Coaches: Scott Bogart and Jeff
Dalrymple -
Thc big question here is whether
second -year players Rob Davis (24-
27-51), Mike Robb (9-17-26) and
Travis Stinchcombe (12-13-25) can
help overage centre Greg DePre,st
(36-55-91) with the scoring.
Gone are Dwayne Price and
Shawn Fairweather to Junior 'B' so
the Irish could be a team to play a
grinding style of hockey with guys
like veterans Derek Greenlee, Steve
Matthews and ScotlrRiddell.
Promising rookies are Devon
Prtchenko and Brent Mills. Big de-
fenseman Bryan Stieffel will score
goals with his big shot and he and
veteran Keith Robson will anchor a
fairly inexperienced blueline corps.
in net the Irish will be very
strong with their twb new puck -
stoppers, Jason Glavin from Ste-
phcn Township and Rob Hotson
who played Junior 'B' in Stratford.
EXETER HAWKS:
Last year: 23-14-3 (3rd)
Coach: Dave Revington
With 13 players back the Hawks
have got a good chance of winning
it all. An experienced coach in Rev-
ington, scoring in Sean McCann
" (37-56-93), Nathan Burns (27-21-
48) and Ray Cousincau (16-29-45)
and good young goaltending the
Hawks have a well-balanced team.
The players are going to have to
give 100 percent all the time as
Revington is looking to ink 25 and
go with the 20 best each night.
Chris Lyndon (3.78 GAA) is
back in net and he'll be joined by
rookie Exeter Minor Hockey As-
sociation product Damn Kints.
There arc four! veteran defense -
man an Isom -not4h rookies.
This team will have all in scor-
ing (McCann, Burns), peed (Jeff
Glavin, Cousincau and raig Cor-
riveau) and toughness (B -an Gard-
ner, Chris Kennedy and la is Cor-
nish).

. BRYDGES BULLDOGS:
Last year: 22-17-1 (4th)
Coach: George Smith
This team could be very inter-
esting. Coach George Smith has
been the Bulldogs' trainer for the
past 15 years and now, instead of
mending them, he'll teach them.
Leading scorcr Trevor Allman
(34-37-71) is gone to Aylmer Jr. B
and defenseman Darren Bennett is
Jr. B in St. Thomas. Paul Hendricks
(24-38-62) and Shane Harrison (25-
23-48) will be counted on to do a
lot of scoring. The Bulldogs have
11 returning players.
Between the pipes, Bulldogs fans
will be pleased to sec the return of
Kyle Blythe who was in Clearwater
Jr. C last year and Alvinston two
years ago after being in Mt. Brydg-
es. He'll be joined by Jake
McCracken from Melbourne who
was with the Elgin -Middlesex
AAA bantams.
LAMBETH LANCERS:
Last year: 20-15-5 (5th)
Coach: Jim Walker
The Lancers have got one edge
over most of the other teams - both
their goalies, Jeff Baldac chino
(3.78) and Jon Finlay (4 98)\arc
back.
Glen MacKinnon returns and he
led the Lancers in scoring a year
ago with 53 points despite playing
in only 29 games. Also back to put
the puck in the net arc Ryan Hug-
gett (15-16-31) and Jamie Allison
(9-14-23).
Coach Jim Walker says, "1 think
we'll be better defensively. Scoring
we lost a bit," with the exit of Tom
Walker and Ban Chinnick who
were second and third respectively
in scoring.
As far as promising rookies are ,
concerned Walker likes Craig Wat-
son and 15 ycar-old Arvin Kim
from London. Due to a lack of a
strong Lambeth midget team there
aren't too many local players on
this club.
Seaforth's Steve Geiger, a
Zurich resident, could be a
big goal scorer with the
Cents. Last year in his rookie
season he had 12 tallies.
SEAFORTH CENTENAIRES:
Last year: 18-18-4 (6th)
Coach: Maurice Guy
While the Ccnts finished sixth in
the west a year ago, they were the
playoff surprise as they eliminated
Exeter in four straight, knocked out
Lucan and then couldn't get by
Mitchell in the division final.
Last year's top perfotmers goalie
Dana Duskocy, defenseman Kar-
sten Carroll, leading -scorer Paul
McLwain and grinding winger Ja-
mie Ramer arc all gone.
In their place the Cents will have
to rely on rookies Jason Murray,
Steve Mclnally, who split time with
the juniors and the midgets, and
Brandon Coriveau, to get the job
done. Steve Geiger (12-17-29) and
Jason Hayter (15-18-33) can score
goals.
Between the pipes, manager Gre-
gor Campbell is pleased with Tim
Swan from the St. Marys midgets
and Dave Nahrgang from the Clin-
ton juveniles.
NORTHMIDDLESEX STARS:
Last year: 7-31-2 (8th)
Coach: Bill Bourne
Manager Wayne Maguire is
pleased with three rookies: defensc-
men Eric Symons and Roy Davis
and centre D.J. Gooding who all
played for the Elgin -Middlesex
bantams last year.
The Stars won only seven games
last year but pushed the Mitchell
Hawks really hard in the opening
round of playoffs. North Middlesex
returns 14 players including sec-
ond -leading scorer Steve Bax (9-
17-26) and Paul Woodburn who
had 13 goals in just 16 games.
Look for Chris Downie and his
25 points along with Nathan
McCann and Rob Daniel to be offe-
nisve threats. On the blueline the
Stars have got a good veteran in
Steven Vandenberk who had nine
goals.
In net, the Stars will miss Andy _
Glavin who has gone on to Lis-
towel Jr. B but Aaron Lucas (6.30
GAA) is back and he's joined by
Matt DanBrook who was with Al-
vinston last year (5.75).
BELMONT BOMBERS:
:.ask year: 5-35-0 (9th)
Coach: Rick Sutherland
There is a new name, new colors,
new sponsor and a new attitude in
Belmont.
They are not called the Pests any-
more as their former owner Bill
Topping is in prison. But the past is
the past in Belmont and manager
Mike Farquhar says there is a lot of
excitement in Belmont about this
year's team. _
"We always had good teams in
the fate 1970's and early 80's," said
Farquhar of the old Bombers.
"There is interest and we've got
some talent."
Goalie Jamie Kernaghan comes
over from Mt. Brydges where he
played in five games and Jan Burt
comes from Delhi in the east divi-
sion where he had a 7.75' GAA in
20 games.
Look for captain Marty Smith,
Jamie Dance -(20-18-38) and Mark
Watson (14-24-38) to be the team
leaders. Top rookie performers
should be Ryan Smith who got in
11 games as a midget last year and
winger Wes Goldie from London.
