Exetei ringette promotion days are well attended
By Fred Groves
T -A staff
HENSALL - The turnout was
good at the annual promo days and
the future looks very promising for
the Exeter and Area Ringette As-
sociation.
Thursday, the association held its
second promo day, an invitation for
new players to come out, meet the
coaches and try their hand at the
sport.
"We were teaching them how to
hold the stick, how to shoot and for
some who have done it before,
some passing drills," said associa-
tion president Michelle Hodgert.
The two nights saw 50 girls on
the ice in Hensall and Hodgert ex-
pects registration to reach nearly
90. Both numbers are well up from
"There is better exposure and the
'kids are talking about it," said Hod-
gen.
A few of the younger ones on the
ice were only three years -old and
although that may be small for put-
ting the skates on, Hodgert said at
that age, many of them can be pan
of ringette.
"It depends on the child. If they
can skate, listen and understand, it's
"There is better
exposure and the
kids are talking
about it."

DISCIPLINE IS A FUNNY WORD
Pat Burns, the Toronto Maple Leafs' coach said it best -- no
more honour in the game, in fact he said, "The code of honor in the
NHL is dead and that's sad. When told, Hunter called this disci-
pline, Burns answered. "Discipline, it's such a funny word,. Their
toughest gut (Tim Hunter) runs over our best player and when our
guy (Rob Pearson) jumps in, Hunter covers up and calls it disci-
pline. He doesn't end up in the penalty box. Believe it or not Dougie
Gilmour and Pearson end up in the penalty box and Hunter who
started it, ends up scot-free. Maybe I'm from the old school. I've
been coaching only seven years in the league and I'm 42. It's hard to
believe I'm old school. But when you run over the other team's best
guy in the old days you'd be expected to stand up to the guy who
looked after the smaller players. Now you just turtle and cover up
and call it discipline and the guy who is trying to protect the smaller
player is thrown out of the game because of the instigator rule.
There arc all kinds of guys acting tough and disciplined when they
were nowhere to be seen before. A
good example of the old school was
last year's semi-final when LA's Mar-
ty McSorley hit Gilmour and Wendel
Clarke went to his rescue and he and
Marty had a toe -to -toe, in other words
a good tussle. Marty expected Wendel
to come and didn't turtle and cover up
like Hunter and call it discipline; now
you can chcapshot the star and when
challenged turn the other cheek and it's
called discipline. "You're not going to
have the great players in our league if they can't be protected and
that's sad," so says Pat Burns, coach of the year of the NHL. And so
says Donald S. Cherry, coach of the year in the AHL and NHL,
two guys who arc not fooled by the word discipline.

fine."
On Thursday in Hensall, coach
Julie Ritchie was very patient with
the younger ones as she showed
them how to skate and also dem-
onstrated slime of the basics.
Those under -seven are in the bun-
ny or Learn -to -Skate program.
Prior to Christmas, they work on
the basics and then after that, they
travel to other centres for actual
games.
Mitchell has 27 players under -
seven while Exeter has just nine of
the younger ones signed up so far.
"That's up from other years. We'd
still like to see more younger ones
involved in the sport," said Hod-
gert.
Exeter will have one bunny aged
team, one novice (8-9), two petites
(10-11), one tween (12-13), one
junior (14-15), and either a belle or
deb for those aged 16 to 22.
"There might be a team in two
age groups, we're not sure yet,"
said Hodgert. "There's a lot of kids
that want to play but work comes
into play. We're hoping to get
something going."
She noted the junior tween team
will be a full squad as they have 17
signed up so far, just no quite
enough for two teams.
The ladies team is entering its
third year, they hit the ice next
week.
Hodgert is also the Huron -Perth
League scheduler and the league in-
cludes the towns of Exeter, Mitch-
ell, St. Mary's, Seaforth, Forest,
Stratford and Goderich. Games in
most divisions are scheduled to
start the third week of October.
The Exeter and Area Ringette As-
sociation has got three big events
on its plate right now including its
very large tournament on No-
vember 18-20 which will be played
in both the Exeter and Hensall are-
nas.
On November 11-13, they will be
hosting part of the Challenge Cup
which is for 'AAA' regional teams.
That will take place in Seaforth.
Last year the Ontario junior team,
including Hensall's Cara Gardner
came to Exeter for a dinner and a
game. This year that event is
planned for December 28.
