(36c) Butternut trees infected EXETER - Another species of tree is in decline in our woodlots. Butternut canker is responsible for the decline of butternut trees throughout North America. Some areas surveyed in Ontario, show greater than 90 percent of the but- ternut trees examined were infect- ed with this fungus. Butternut has a light coloured wood which is used in expensive panel work, cabinets and altars. In October, the sweet edible, foot- ball -shaped nuts mature. The nuts were prized by the first pioneers and considered a winter delicacy. Butternut usually has wide spread- ing crowns with horizontal branch- es; compound leaves (each leaf consisting of 11 to 17 smaller leaf- lets); and a fuzzy, moustache -like protuberance over the scars left when leaves drop, distinguishing the twigs and aiding in winter identification. Trees of all ages and sizes are in- fected. Cankers spread around branches and trunks, eventually girdling the trees and, after several years, killing them. Dying branch- es, dead tops and loose bark are signs of the canker's presence. The Ausable-Bayfield Conserva- tion Authority is working with the Ministry of Natural Resources to collect information on butternut trees in this area. If you know of any Butternut trees or groves please report their location, size, and condition to Steve Harburn at the ABCA at 235-2610. Through this co-operative effort and with public input, hopefully the status and the need for preserving this unique species can be determined, says the ABCA.
