GUY LA FLEUR, A CLASSY GUY
There is no hockey player I loved to watch than Guy La Fleur
except the greatest player of all time, Bobby Orr, but other than
Bobby, Guy was my favorite. Now i know what you're thinking,
"Wait a minute, Cherry, who loves Rock 'em, Sock'em hockey
loves a guy named "a flower". Who killed him time and time again
in the games between the Bruins and the Habs especially in that sev-
enth game in the '79 semi-finals where he shot a bullet past Gilly
Gilbert for the tying goal with 1:43 left in the game. Yes I have to
admit, to sec The Flower streaking down the wing, hair flowing out
behind him and his sweater rippling, it was hockey. I know a lot of
people could not understand why i didn't send out one of my enforc-
ers to intimidate or hurt him like they do the stars now. Maybe they
were right, maybe I did show him too much respect, but to me going
out and trying to maim the stars is not hockey. The Bruins always
went after the best gunfighter on the club not the stars (it is sad to -
see what they have done to our stars, every star was hurt last year by
cheap shots, as Mario said "The league does not protect the star and
the fact is, in the past before the instigation rule, the player them-
selves policed the game, touch our superstar and you're dead meat.
Semenko riding shot gun for Gretzky, Clarke Gilles protector
Mike Bossy, John Wensink, Terry O'Reilly, Stan Johnathon,
protecting Jean Batelle, if a player touched Jean he better have his
life insurance paid up for his family; at the upshot of it all is the stars
could play and shine and not worry about some cheap shot artist
hurting them.)
The word class always comes to my
mind when I think of The Flower,
now don't get me wrong, Guy never
had a free ride when he played us he
had the best defensive forward of all
time (in my book) Don Marcotte on
him. Everytime Guy was on the icc
Donnie was there; if Guy stayed on
for five shifts, Donnie would stay on
the icc for five. (i remember one time
thcy both got cut, neither would leave
the icc, when thcy finally did go off,
they both stood at the door of the bench eying each other to see if
uric or the other wound jump on. it reminded me of two -varriors
ready for battle).
