Workshops being held
in conjunction with quilt show
GRAND BEND - The 1994 Quilt Show and Sale, September 17 to 25, at
the Lambton Heritage Museum is hosting a wide variety of quilting work-
shops. These workshops offer something for everyone from the absolute
beginner through to experienced quitters who would like to try their hand
at the latest quilting project/technique.
The workshops are provided by a talented group of local quiltmakers
and are offered on Monday, September 19 through to Sunday, September
25.
Mary -Ellen Rawlings of Arkona begins the week by showing how to
construct a table runner by cutting strips, sewing them together in a strata,
recutting, and then re -sewing until you have completed your table runner.
It can be done in Christmas fabrics or fabrics to match any room's decor.
Rawlings returns on Sunday to solve the Shocbox Mystery. She will help
you create four eight -inch blocks out of all of the fabric scraps you can
stuff in a shoebox.
Ileirloom Fabrics' very own Sheila O'Hagan of Petrolia offers Minia-
ture Quilts using Foundation Piecing and Crazy Quilted Slippers. Partici-
pants will make a four block miniature quilt in Log Cabin or Pineapple
pattern using a paper foundation. When finished you will have a block
about 12" square. Do you need a new pair of slippers for winter? Why not
•
make use of all kinds of fabric scraps including plaids, flannels, and cotton
and with Sheila's help create a pair of Boot -like Slippers with non-skid
soles!
For those who like to sew by hand, Karen Hewett of Forest, will show
English Paper Piecing. This quick and easy technique will let participants
piece hexagons and complete a block, suitable for a pillow cover.
Quilting for the Absolute Beginner will offer the basics in quiltmaking.
Participants will learn the basics of piecing and applique to make a single
block, suitable for potholder or pillow cushion. There will be discussion of
piecing patterns, choosing fabrics and colours.
Fran Nichol of Arkona, will use quick piecing methods (shortcuts) in
Around the Twist. This is a simple two -block combination for participants
to create a twisted illusion quilt top, hence the name. She also offers Dres-
den Plate Drama, a traditional pattern using a single medium -scale floral
print. By choosing a flower in their fabric participants will make a one -of -
kind block.
As space is limited, registration is required in advance for the work-
shops. The registration fee includes admission to the Quilt Show.
