Oklahoma has a
weak first act
Huron Country Playhouse's final
show of the year did get better

GRAND BEND - A horse, six shooters and cowboy hats - every-
thing it takes to make a good western.
But wait, this one has music, singing and dancing - yes, it's Okla-
homa.
The 1943 Rodgers and Hammerstein's hit has come to the Huron
Country Playhouse where it will run until September 3. For those
who go see it, be patient.
This `six scene, two act play takes a while to get going. Last
Wednesday night at the opening, the audience were fidgeting in their
scats for the first act as it was somewhat uninteresting.
But explosively the second act comes to life with a very colorful
old 'fashioned how -down. In this number "Thc Farmer and the Cow-
man", the entire 28 -member cast fill the stage with the play's most
exciting number.
Oklahoma doesn't really have much of a story to it - it's simply a
girl who is trying to get a boy. However, while there is little plot, the
main character Curly, played by Dan Chameroy captivates the audi-
ence with a very powerful voice.
Chameroy is tall and handsome, perfectly cast for the role. He
makes his debut at the Playhouse after a successful run in Les Mis-
erables.
Leisa Way plays the girl, Laurey but she overacts and her constant
open-mouthed smile, at times, gets to be a little too much. This is a
girl who is having to chose between Curly, while Jud (played by Da-
vid Nairn) is also trying to win her heart.
Way was superb earlier this year in the HCP's Peter Pan but the
flamboyancy needed in that role was carried to Oklahoma which
was not required.
Director Max Reimer cast several members of Peter Pan for Okla-
homa including the talented Liz Gilroy who plays Ado Annie. Regu-
lar HCP gocrs will remember her as Tiger Lilly in Peter Pan. Gilroy
can sing, dance, act and even knows how to highlight a funny mo-
ment.
While the first act of Oklahoma is a little drawn out, there is one
exceptional moment in which a dream scene is portrayed. Dancers
Andrea Sherwood and Glen Kerr were very good in this.
Oklahoma allows the HCP to take full advantage of its new fly
tower as scenery is moved in and out and also suspended.
There is a very strong supponing cast in this production including
Christopher Shyer who plays Will Parker, George Pothitos as Ali
Hakim and Grand Bend's own Barbara Wheeldon as Aunt Eller.
Next on the boards: The Huron Country Playhouse have an-
nounced its 1995 lineup - West Side Story, Thc Foreigner, i'II Be
Back before Midnight, Who's Under Fire and My Fair Lady...
Dan Chameroy as Curly and Leisa Way as Laurey in Okla-
homa! on stage at Huron Country Playhouse until Septem-
ber 3.
