Centralia's classic car show is a hit
An electric car first built in 1917 was the oldest vehicle at Centralia's first time show
By Mary Peterson
CENTRALIA - On Saturday, Au-
gust 20, at the Centralia ball dia-
mond, the music truck played a va-
riety of summer rock and roll tunes
as cars and trucks from the past
drove into the diamond.
The Centralia -Huron Park Lion's
Club hosted its first hot rod and
classic car show. Organizer Ron
Harvey was pleased with the sup-
port for this first-ever event, al-
though some people didn't display
their cars because of the threaten-
ing weather. Around 3:30 p.m., the
storm broke, and the old autos re-
turned home in the rain.
Many awards and door prizes
were presented. Richard Simpson
brought his '49 Ford from North
York and won for travelling the
longest distance. The Suncruisers
carne from London to win the
award for most club participation.
People's Choice awards went to
Tom Rathwell, Harvey Holme, Ed
VanPuymbbroek, Randy Pear, Ken
Smith, Harry Tozer, Sheila and
Ken Reidy, all from London and
Albert Kriesz from Brunner. The
oldest car was an interesting elec-
tric car, a 1917 Rausch and Lamb.
Car parts, crafts, and candies
were some of the products availa-
ble from vendors. The Lion's Club
sold hamburgers and hot dogs.
Freshly baked pies were available
from Centralia United Church.

An easy way of testing for AIDS antibodies as
well as detecting cocaine, and nicotine use, is
saliva testing. Samp'es are actually taken off
the cheek area of the mouth and sent for anal-
ysis. Some life insurance companies are using
this method to screen applicants.
A new Surgical tethnkpue to help patients with severe emphyse-
ma is showing encouraging results. It involves surgically remov-
ing 20-30% of the lungs (primarily the useless portions) allowing
the rest of the lung to work more efficiently. It is not a cure, but
it has resulted as much as an 80% improvement of breathing.
In Britain, a woman cannot adopt a child if she smokes more
than five cigarettes a day. That's another way of discouraging an
unhealthy activity like smoking.
Got an itch? Don't scratch itl Easy to say, hard to do. Scratching
just makes the itch worse. Try ice compresses for temporary re-
lief. Even very hot compresses can be helpful. The elderly and di
abetics should use caution if trying heat.

HOW CAN I RECOGNIZE SUICIDE -PRONE PEOPLE?
Studies have shown that most people who attempt to take their own
lives give some waming of their plan beforehand, either in words or in
actions. By recognizing these signs, family and friends can help avert a
suicide by helping the person to work through his or her problems.
First and foremost is a threat to commit suicide. This should always be
taken seriously. The danger .becomes greater when such a threat is
combined with other "situational signs" of a potential suicide: family
problems, money or health problems, divorce or the death of a loved
one.
Emotional signs, such as a personality change, severe depression, or
neglecting one's personal appearance also can be signs of impending
trouble.
Psychologists tell us the best way to help such a person is to help him
or her talk about the problems and perhaps help work out a solution to
some of them. Professional help is also suggested. The most important
factor, they say, is to form a trusting, accepting relationi;hip.
