Times Advocate, 1994-7-27, Page 16Page 16 Times -Advocate, July 27, 1994 SLQRTh Thunder'beaten 7-0 by Scarborough in Unico Cup EXETER - After winning the first game of the Unico Cup by a defauh, the Exeter Thunder were no match for visiting Scarborough Sunday afternoon. In the 18 -and -under tournament game, the Thunder slipped behind 3-0 at the half and the visitors con- tinued to put the ball past a very tired Thunder goalie Jason Murray, winning 7-0. One of the better chances the hosts had in the first half carne when Jeremy Truemncr kicked the ball just about a foot over thc cross- bar. About two minutes after Bryan McAllister made a good defensive play, heading the ball away from the opposition's attack, Scar- borough scored to make it 1-0. That would be the only goal they needed against the offensively flat Thunder. An Exeter defender was easily beaten on the second goal. Luke Sims made a good de- fensive effort but as soon as the ball got to Scarborough a hooking shot into the top corner made it 3-0 at the half. In the first half, Exeter's Dave Farquhar broke up the middle, showed a lot of speed to get into the corner as he beat two players but the hosts couldn't capitalize. Exeter's Luke Sims, left; has the ball go past him. Middle, a dejected Jason Murray takes a break. Dave Farquhar, right, cools down during a break. Although they lost 3-1 to the Selects, Exeter battled back and got a trip to the final with a 1-0 wit over St. Thomas. Just returning from the Eastern Regional International Softball Congress North American finals in Michigan, the Royals arc now tied one game each with Goderich in the best -of -three series. Sunday night saw the Royals play well but just not good enough. Lel-Wielder Greg Dalrymple had a second inning home run and pitch- er Steve Cook clubbed a triple in the third. "Third txiseman Ben Arm- strong had a good outing at the plate as he had a pair of hits. Cook went thc distance on the mound and he allowed just six hits while striking out seven and giving up just five walks. Last Tuesday in Godcrich, the Royals took the series opener, a slim 7-6 decision. In this one, Dalrymple blasted a three -run homer in the sixth to win the game which saw the visiting Royals score four runs in their half of the first inning. At the tournament in Michigan, the Royals lost their first game 2-1 to Aurora and then were edged 3-2 by Scarborough. "It's good experience, it's the first time they've played outside the country," said Exeter Imperials' coach Fred ('ook who joined the team in Michigan. "If we went next year I'm sure we'd improve." Meanwhile the Imperials took their 7-7 record to Mitchell Monday night where thcy were scheduled to take on the Mets. With six games remaining in the South Perth Men's Fasthall League regular season, the Imperials will probably have to win four of those to make the 'A' playoffs. 744144 *ea MERHAVEN FARMS would like to thank all the sponsors for supporting the HORSE SHOW we are having on SUNDAY, JULY 31/94 at 9 AM.
