Exeter woman voted

Ontario Conservatives
EXETER - Although the Ontario
government isn't expected to call an
election until sometime next year,
that doesn't mean campaign strat-
egies and election issues aren't be-
ing planned right now.
For Terra Ahrens, a 22 -year-old
Exeter resident,that mans making
sure young people have a voice
within the Conservative party.
Ahrens was recently elected to be
a key player in executive of the On-
tario Progressive Youth Associa-
tion. The Association is directed
towards those aged 14-30.
Last.Sunday, more than 400 Con-
servative youth delegates voted for
Ahrens to take on the two-year po-
sition called the first vice-president
of the association.
This came after a month of talk-
ing to people and travelling across
the province almost every weekend
to share her views and ask for sup-

she said of her nomination.
She said provincial issues are

lows with a great deal of interest.
Ahrens has been with the or-
ganization for the past two years.
In that time she worked in a num-
ber of areas for the organization
such as recruitment director at the
University of Western Ontario and
youth liaison for the Huron Riding
Association.
Right now she is spending about
an hour a night talking to delegates
and introducing herself to key
players.
• And when the election is called,
she will help organize youth vol-
unteering with the Conservative
party.

LUCAN - Works superintendent
Doug Johnston has called tenders
for the installation of curbs, gutters
and sidewalks on the Duchess Ave-

close on July 27 and the contract
will be awarded at the August 2
council meeting.
Johnston added, " I would like to

council that Middlesex county has
approved the reassessment program

Not only is she busy with this
volunteer position, but Ahrens is
also looking for full time employ-
ment having graduated from West-
ern with an honours degree in polit-
ical science.
"Ideally I would like to work in
government," she said.
And in the future she can pos-
sible see entering politics as a can-
didate rather than working behind
the scenes.
"It's in the back of my mind to
run," Ahrens said.
But right now she is focussed on

Wentworth lights up Stratford's Othello
A moody play about honesty and evil is marred by a 1940s setting
By Adrian Harte
T -A Editor
STRATFORD -' A riveting performance by Scott Wentworth is the
centrepiece of the Stratford Festival's presentation of Shakespeare's
Othello.
On the Avon stage until October 15 , Wentworth brings an almost
military precision to the character of lago. A scheming and jealous
conspirator in the opening act, Wentworth uses superb body language
and stage presence to transform lago into an irrational embodiment of
evil by the time he is led from the stage in handcuffs in the final scene,
still smirking at the death and destruction he has wrought.
Wentworth's portrayal of lago is the only character for whom the
backdrop of a World War II military buildup actually works. Yet an-
other attempt by a director to "re -interpret" Shakespeare in a new time
frame, only Wentworth's crew-cut, strutting,Iago appears appropriate.
Otherwise, hearing the rest of the cast speak of their Venetian home-
land and the invading Turkish army, while wearing American uniforms
is faintly absurd.
Admittedly, the sweep of car headlights across the stage, combined
with the line "What lights are those" is somewhat amusing.
The Festival's veteran leading lady, Lucy Peacock, appears in this
production as the hapless Desdeinona, convincingly protesting her in-
nocence to her husband Othello, powerfully played by Ron O'Neal.
This production of Othello
quickly casts off its racial over-
tones to focus on the true theme
of the play, the issues of trust and
honesty. The word "honest"•ap-
pears so often that it quickly los-
es its meaning, particularly when
it is so often mistaken. The mon-
ochromatic set, complete with
ominous black columns flanking
the stage for much of the play,
does not reflect the racial issues
so much as the questions of good
and evil.
Even though the Avon Theatre
often plays second fiddle to the
main stage, make no mistake:
Wentworth's lago is worth the
ticket price alone.

duction of Othello this sea-
