Times Advocate, 1994-7-20, Page 16Page 16 Tunes Advocate July 20 1994 SPORES__ Exeter plays host to annual baseball clinic Stratford Hillers' players had 24 locals attend By Fred Groves T -A staff EXETER - While a inajbt league baseball strike may be op the ho- rizon, locally, young ball players are showing their enthusiasm and last week spent several hours at the Alvin Willert Field. The two dozen players were tak- ing part in the annual Exeter Minor Baseball Association's Stratford Hillers baseball clinic. Diving for the ball, gliding, base running, hitting and fielding were just a few of the skills being taught by Miles Tourigny and Ted Camp- bell from the Hillers of the Inter - county Baseball League. "We start them off with a run and then some stretches to get them loose, that take's about half an hour," said Tourigny who not only pitches for the Hillers but coaches Stratford's junior team as well. Twenty-four players may be a lot for some coaches to handle and to teach but Tourigny and Campbell didn't seem to mind as they put the locals through their paces over the five-day clinic. "It's the perfect size With two in- structors you can have fielders, you can have runners," said Tourigny. It's also a good working size group for the afternoon scrimmages. Many younger baseball players Thunder to meet Raiders in semis Unico Cup continues on Sunday EXETER - Last week was a very frustrating ort for the Exeter Thunder. The under -18 team was scheduled to play the first game of the Unico Cup against Niagara Falls but the opposing Shiners were a no-show. Monday, there was no referee for their game against visiting Mar- coni and Wednesday they were beaten by Sarnia Dante who only came with nine players. Sunday at 4 p.m. at the Canner's Field, the Thunder will take on North York Raiders who beat Scarborough last Sunday. This is a semi-final game in the 13 -team tournament. "We'll be prepared. We had a lot of hype and emotion last Sun- day," said Thunder coach John Rasenberg. This is the first time Exeter has gone into the tournament which is similar to a provincial championship. A large crowd is expected for the game. "The teams are good. When we tried it we knew we might be above our heads. We'll play a; ery defensive game." Last night the Thunder were scheduled to play a league game against visiting London Curinga and one thing the locals had to work on was their offence. "It's a lack of ability to finish," said Rasenberg. "It will come, our weak point is putting the ball in the net." Exeter domi- nated the entire game and had many shots on net but often could not get the ball past the strong Glencoe goalkeeper. ' shy away from wanting to play the outfield. They don't think there is much action and it's tough for them to keep focused when they are oat on the grass. "At this age (9-14), they don't get too many balls hit to them. As they get older they'll like it. You can chase balls and dive for them," said Campbell who pitches and plays the outfield for the Hillers. In baseball, especially at the younger age, there is always the fear of getting hit with the ball. It hurts, but once the player gets home the pain goes away. "We tell them it will hurt a little," said Tourigny. "You're going to get hit with the ball eventually." Campbell said a good way to overcome the fear of being hit is to just hang in there and keeping go- ing after the ball. When you come up with the big play, you'll feel pretty good "They get a little confidence, then they get right back at it," said Campbell. Both instructors said that at a young age, it's important to learn , how to play more than one posi- tion. However they also noted the importance of having strong pitch- ers. "I'm a college baseball coach (in Tennessee) and that's what we put our money on," said Tourigny. Pitching is still the most im- portant part of the game and Camp- bell also aailed that strong defence is also a big factor. When it comes to offence, you can always man- ufacture runs throeh walks, errors and sacrifices. While hockey has always had a Canadian domination about it, baseball is American. There are a few sprinklings of Canadian talent in pro baseball like Toronto's Rob Butler and Larry. Walker of the Montreal Expos, but there aren't many from this country. "Dan Masse, he's a local product and hopefully that's encouraging," said Tourigny. Masse a Zurich native pitched for the Stratford juniors last summer before going to Oklahoma on a scholarship with his brother Derek. Recently, Dan's 95 miles per hour fastball caught the eye of the Cin- cinnati Reds who drafted him. Thursday they travelled to Thorn - dale where they won 16-10 in a shortended five -inning game and Sunday in Area, won in a more challenging 6-2 contest. Last night the Express were go- ing to try and wr,.p up. the regular season with six in a row as they took on visiting Strathroy in a make-up game. Against Thomdale, the Express struggled defensively as the hosts led 10-3 at the end of four innings but they ran out of pitchers in the top of the fifth and Exeter exploded for 13 runs. Thorndale gave up eight walks in the fifth and that, combined with a grand slam home run by Express Mark Glavin gave Exeter the win. The game was also shortened be- cause of curfew. Mike Agnew started on the mound for Exeter and although he struck out six in the three innings he worked, allowed seven walks and seven runs. Rick Boon came on and gave up three runs. Sunday, the visiting Express re- ceived strong pitching from Marty Merner who went a full nine in- nings and struck out eight while al- lowing just one walk. Both runs were unearned as the Express made three errors during this game. Exeter scored four runs in their half of the third as Rob Dickey, Ag- new, Boon, Dave Russell and Steve Farquhar all had base hits. They added another in the sixth when Russell triple and scored on Don Macdonald's hit. 7th annual Mixed Slow Pg tch Horse Shoe Tournament July 29, 30, 31 Teams needed CaII and confirm at 228-'6575 GRAND OPENING Don Thompson and Rose Marie Rader of CIS Asset Management Corporation welcome you to the grand opening of their Exeter office located at: 386 Main St. 3:30 p.m. July 22, 1994 r4:00 p.m. Ribbon Cutting • • Refreshments Served • CIS Asset Management Corporation is a registered mutual fund, limited market dealer and deposit broker serving the following communities: London, Sarnia, St. Thomas, Forest, Exeter, Port Elgin, Kitchener, Guelph, Woodstock, Brantford, Paris, Hagersville, St. Catharines, Newmarket, Niagara Falls, and Ottawa •CIS Asset Management Corporation is a member of the Canadian Deposit Brokers Association._ 1s P Corporation 1 386 Main Street 235-4080 Exeter CIS Asset Management THE BACKLASH IS COMING! You know Canada used to be a lovely safe country. I remember when I was a kid, I used to come to Toronto from Kingston with my Dad and brother Richard to take in the EX. How exciting it wasWe used to get there by train (never had a car) and stay at the people's home who advertised for people to stay at their private home. (I can remember the lights flickering because they were on a 4 cycle some- thing or other.) It was wonderful, and if you got lost, nobody worried and some- body would help you walk along Younge Street. It was clean, safe and everybody was courteous. Walk down Younge Street today and you'll see it's a zoo. It's not too had in the winter, but when the sum- mer comes and it gcts warm, they crawl out from under their rocks and it's pretty scary. I remember when they used to have the Orange Parade with King Billy on his white horse. The crowd was orderly, having clean fun, cheering and clapping. Now there's parades with guys kissing rguys and other parades where people are stalking one another, there's drugs, fights with police and you name it. Toronto's a city gone nuts! If you don't believe me, walk down Younge Street at about 1 in the morning. (Have your insurance paid up). Here's another great story, about the Pharmacist in Cobourg On- tario, robbed by punks 8 times in 2 years. So this poor store owner get's robbed again and this time he shoots the tires out of the druggic's get- away car. Guess who get's charged? You guessed it, the store owner, Just an- other case of the laws protecting the criminals and the victims be damned. Gotta protect those criminals rights, you know. I am so damn sick of hearing about people's rights. What about the re- sponsibilities to protect the good and worthy people. ALKS 44 %.40•C' Wed. - Set. .4zV Summer Clothing 2014-511 caps 25%°" Ball Equipment 20% °n Bats 25%°" *check out our "Backyard" Sale!
