Council votes to
look at buying old
town office
If the price is too good to refuse, council
is prepared to buy the municipal building
from the federal government
EXETER - Looking at an offer they couldn't refuse, town council
took the first step towards the purchase of the current municipal of-
fice, despite the fact a new town hall is in the works.
The federal government has offered to sell the former post office
building, the current town hall, to Exeter for a price council agreed
was a bargain.
"1 move we buy it," said councillor Dave Urlin.
"What for?" asked reeve BiII Mickle, to which Urlin replied it
could be resold at a later date.
"Are we in the real estate business?" asked Mickle.
Councillor Bob Drummond made a motion to recommend to the
succeeding council to purchase a building in 1995.
"Personally I don't think we should wait a day," said councillor
Ben Hoogenboom, but council noted the town doesn't have the funds
in its budget for 1994 for the purchase.
Nevertheless, the town stands third in line to purchase the prop-
erty, which will first be offered to federal, then provincial de-
partments and agencies.
Three accidents investigated
EXETER - Police were called to
three accidents of a serious nature
this past week on local roads.
On Monday, a vehicle driven by
Kelly Schenk of Zurich struck a
deer on Highway 83 east of Hay
Township Concession 6-7. No inju-
ries were reported to the driver, but
vehicle damage was severe. -
Last Wednesday, vehicles driven
by Clayton Keys of Clinton and
Hitske Jonkman of RR2 Wyoming
collided at the intersection of High-
ways 4 and 83 in Exeter. There
were no injuries, but Keys vehicle
was lightly damaged, and Jonkman's
severely damaged.
Last Tuesday, vehicles driven by
Ruth Ann Dean of Exeter and Scott
Keys of RRI Exeter collided on
Sherwood Crescent in Exeter. Keys
received a minor injury and there
was light damage to both vehicles.
Correction: Huron's Health Unit
did want to pursue $25, 000 grant
An report in last week's Times -Advocate that the Huron County
Health Unit had turned down a Ministry of Health Grant for a to-
bacco use prevention program was in error.
In fact, it was the County's Board of Health that turned down the
grant offer from the ministry.
Dr. Maarten Bokhout of the Health Unit has argued that the grant
would be of benefit to preventing the sale of tobacco to minors, in-
creasing public awareness of tobacco use, and responding to public
complaints of smoking area violations.
The Times Advocate regrets the error.

Huron County
looks at 9-1-1
Local fire departments will
be asked for their input
GODERICH - An important emergency service may soon be com-
ing to Huron County.
At a recent county council meeting, council voted to establish a
working committee to investigate the feasibility of establishing and
implementing a county wide 911 emergency calling number.
Local municipalities will be involved in the committee and fire de-
partments will be asked for their input.
The service would cost each telephone owner 32 cents a month but
their Would be additional costs for call answering and dispatching.
There is some concern from local fire departments in that in may
to great a burden on their volunteer staff.
