Beginning Thursday, powerboats lar m across North America came into the Lake Huron waters for the Power Boating Canada Magazinc's second of four poker runs. "The event was a huge success it brought out thousands of people alflhg the coast line," said local or- ganizer Terry McTavish. "All the participanwere greeted with open arms and they're looking forward to coming back next year." There were Atboats that signed up for Saturday's rtln but, because of high waves, only 22 were able to finish the day -long event which saw stops in Gixicrich, Kincardine and Bayfield. While many people had the chance to look at the high-powered boats up close, there was some dis- aptfointment on the weekend as the Great Canadian Kilo Challenge was cancelled. "The waves were crashing over the north pier. The kilo run had to tic called off," said McTavish. "The A boat crew heads back into the Grand Bend harbour during Saturday's Lake Huron Poker Run. waves were incredible, the par- ticipants wanted to get out and see what time their boats could turn." There arc four poker runs this summer, the first of those was on Lake Ontario June 24-26 and some of the boats in that run were dam- aged and therefore could not make it to Grand Bend. Saturday, the waves on Lake Hu- ron, just off the Grand Bend har- bour were up to seven feet high but, the next day they rose even higher. "Lake Ontario was much worse, we were running in 10 to 12 foot waves," said driver Brian Ross. "We had wind and rain, there's a lot of boats that aren't here -because they're damaged." Ross piloted the Snap -On -Tools 38 -foot Dccp-V which was packing 1,20) horsepower. Although his boats is primarily for display and promotional purposes, it was one of the sleekest looking boats which were in the waters near Grand Bend. "We just got the boat finished and back to us on May 24. We've been involved in trade show. We've spent a lot of time breaking it in." Ross who said his boat will make a MO at the Molson Indy, noted that the Snap-On Tools boat only goes in the runs and, even if the 46 -Challenge went ahead', would have not entered. Sam Maye was one of the 22 drivers that finished the race and he was in a 34 -foot Scarab with 800 horsepower. "It was rough," he said of the wa- ters on Saturday, "but smooth com- ing back. Some of the guys went out and car t,e back in." If the run returns to Grand Bend next year, which McTavish is cer- tain it will, look for Maye to b$"one of the participants. "The towns have been very hos- pitable. I think it's because they haven't seen boats like this before." One of the boats which had a lot of attention, especially when it pulled into the harbour Friday after- noon was Fred Kiekhaefer (son of the founder of Mercury Marine and president of the Mercury "Hi - Performance Group) who brought in the 42 -foot Off Duty.
