celebrates the
past in village
Grand Bend now has a historic plaque
GRAND BEND - Loreen Gill
and Catherine Junker came dressed
for the occasion.
Wearing there best turn -of -the -
century dresses they fit right in
with the Heritage Day celebration
held Sunday afternoon in Grand
Bend.
Held at the corner of Alberta and
River Road, over a hundred people
came out to remember the cut in
the river which help put GYand
Bend on the map.
There was a tug-of-war which
saw the Stephen Township council
beat their counterparts from Grand
Bend but when the final grunt
could be heard, it was thc Blue -
water Sodbusters winning it all.
An ice cream eating contest, bar-
ber shop singing and antique cars
were part of the show.
While a Ideal committee was in
charge of the day's activities, it was
the Grand Bend Women's Institute
which was instrumental in bringing
the historical plaque to the village.
In her address to the crowd, Gill,
a member of the local Women's In-
stitute pointed out what her group
is all about.
"The members have focused on
raising the living standards and
health of people in Grand Bend;"
said Gill.
Grand Bend's WI started back in
April, 1945 and Gill said in 1985,
eight of the local ladies were given
pins for 25 years or more service.
Looking back, times have changed:
"In 1947 hobby fairs were very
interesting. You could get two
sandwiches for ten cettts-;. said Gill.
Getting a heritage plaque is no
easy task, the people in Grand
Bend had to work hard for four
years to have their historical con-
tribution recognized by the Ontario
Heritage Federation.
Members of the
Heritage Day
organizing
committee,
above, unveil the
historic plaque.
Right, Grand
Bend councillors
Phil Maguire, Bill
Uniac, Cam Ivey
and Ed Fluter
give it their all in
the tug-of-war.
"The plaques are difficult to get.
It goes through a competition. It
has to be on a subject of provincial
significance," said Paul Liu of the
Ontario Heritage Foundation.
Usually only about five go up
across the province but Litt said
this year there -are more.
• "This year 10 are going up. The
norm from now on will be five. The
backlog is being retired," said Lilt.
