Beach volleyball alive and well
in the sands at Grand Bend
GRAND BEND - For the fourth consecutive year, the hard-hitting,
sand -flying action of beach volleyball hays come to Grand Bend.
Saturday. and Sunday saw a total of 65 teams competing in bath
four a side and two a side competition. •
"Ours is originally a four (a side) series," said Dave Goulet, pres-
ident of Triple Crown Sports which ran the event. "We Introduced
two -e) and we're getting a lot of response."
On Saturday, the cool temperatures along the Lake Huron'hore-
line brought few spectators but the following day there were hun-
dreds watching the action.
Playing beach volleyball is like running with cement blocks on
your feet. The resistance from the sand catches up and it takes a lot
of stamina to keep going in the heat.
The Grand Bend event was the second in a total of ten that Triple
Crown puts on, the next one is this weekend at Wasaga Beach. Win-
ners from each one not only qualify for the provincial champion-
ships but the North American Beach Volleyball Championships in
Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
"They win a berth in the provincial championships in Markham.
That's where we give away the big prizes," said Goulet.
At the volleyball tournaments, teams compete in men's, women's
and mixed divisions. It is gesigned to cater to beach volleyball clubs
and leagues and "weekend warriors" of all ages and abilities.
