Ighllght of Summer Active
'EXETER - Exeter and its sur-
rounding communities are getting
active.
Each year the town of Exeter and
surrounding municipalities have
celebrated Summer Active pre-
viously known as Fitweek, by or-
ganizing events that promote an
active and healthy lifestyle through
physical activity.
The nine day event began on Fri-
day with Sneaker Day. People in
the community, either at work, at
school or at play were encouraged
to wear their sneakers for the day.
During Summer Active Week, the
staff of the South Huron Rec-
reation Centre set up demonstra-
tions of various programs based
out of their facility and offered an
open house for other recreation
and leisure oriented businesses in
town.
Lynne Farquhar, Recreation Di-
rector, said the program began sev-
en years ago when businesses used
to hold mini -corporate challenges
in conjunction with the Huron
County Health Centre; but it has
since expanded to encompass all
facets of the community.
"It's designed to promote a
healthy lifestyle and also to let
people know what type of rec-
reational activities are available in
their community," said Farquhar.
"We hope people who are not ac-
tive will get active and take the op-
portunity to watch or participate in
one of the demonstrations."
One of the new demonstrations
this year is an in-line roller blading
clinic conducted by Jason Hey-
wood of the University of Western
Ontario Mustangs and Jeff MacL-
ean of the Kitchener Junior "B"
Dutchmen. The clinic takes place
toaight (Wednesday) at 6:30 p.m.
on the cement floor inside the Rec
Centre.
MacLean said it is geared to-
wards the beginner and to the ex-
perienced roller blader and will in-
corporate roller hockey skills.
"'There's a big difference be-
tween roller blading a::d ice skat-
ing, especially in turning and stop-
ping. You don't have the same
agility on roller blades as you do
on ice," he said.
Roller hockey is growing in pop-
ularity and there has already been
a professional roller hockey league
established in the United States.
The Ree Centre will hold a youth
roller hockey tournament in Sep-
tember in conjunction with the Ex-
eter Fall Fair.
Co-op Juniors split :last two games
EXETER - The Exeter Co-op
Juniors squeaked a one run win
over Thomdalc on Saturday after -
suffering a 10-1 loss to Byron
Thursday.
Although Thursday's score was a
bit lop -sided, the Co -Op Juniors
didn't really end this game on a dis-
couraged effort.
Byron batters hit three home runs
over the left field fence. Two of the
blasts were off Exeter starter Mark
Glavin and one from pitcher
Dwight Gingerich.
Exeter Co -Op Juniors left 11 run-
ners on the bases. Twice bases
were loaded with two away. Scot
Kemp and Joe Maskell both hit
balls deep to the warning track,
only to have Byron fielders make a
fine defensive plays.
Mark Glavin and Dwight Ginge-
rich allowed eight hits between
them with five walks. Shawn Gil-
lespie pitched the last two innings,
striking out the six batters he faced.
Co-operative communication prevented Darryl Hartman
and Scot Kemp from colliding after both chased a pop fly
during an Exeter Co-op junior baseball game on Saturday.
Imperials split a pair
EXETER - Exeter Imperials de-
feated Moorefield 5-3 last Tuesday
night at the South Huron Rec Cen-
tre.
Catcher Gavin Snell was the of-
fensive player of the game as he
singled, tripled, walked, scored two
runs and drove in a run in three at
bats. Also contributing offensively
were Greg Rutledge, with his sec-
ond home run in two games, Greg
Dalrymple with a triple, Darren
Kints with a double and Kenn
Hines with a single.
Starting pitcher Steve Cook went
the distance for the win, allowing
three runs on four hits, while walk-
ing four, hitting a batter and strik-
ing out 12.
On Sunday night, Exeter trav-
elled to Hickson where they were
trimmed 9-3 by the host club. Ga-
vin Snell continued his hot hitting
Centennials.
lose to Marconi
EXETER - The Exeter Centenni-
als played Marconi on Friday drop-
ping a disappointing 2-1 game to
the host team.
. After a scoreless first half, Exet-
er's Mark Brintnell opened the
scoring after a shot by Jeff Lingard
put the Marconi goalkeeper out of
position.
The Centennials goalie mishan-
dled an easy shot allowing Marconi
to tit the game at one. The tieing
goal seemed to motivate the host
team as they began to put on the
pressure.
A questionable call late in the
game ell .fled marconi to a penalty
shot. T .e resulting goal secured
the victory for Marconi.
The Exeter Centennials will trav-
el to London to play the Olympics
on Sunday. Game time is 7 p.m.
with a single and a walk in four
trips to the plate. He also drove in a
run and scored a run. Snell has
reached base 14 times in 25 at bats
thus far this year for an on base per-
centage of .560.
Kevin Gooder and Ben Arm-
strong each tripled in three trips
while Chris Kennedy added two
singles. Starting pitcher, Kevin
Gooder'took the loss as he worked
three and 1/3 innings, allowing six
runs on eight hits while walking
three and stroking out five. Cook
worked two and 2f3 innings in re-
lief, allowing a run on four hits,
while striking out four.
Exeter's record now stands at two
and four losses with road games
scheduled Monday and Thursday
this week. They will be travelling
to Mitchell this weekend for a'Jun-
ior tournament.
Exeter`s Scot Kemp hit two sin-
gles and Jason Maskell, Darryl
Hartman, Dale Hopf and Shawn
Gillespie each contributed singles.
Byron, probably the strongest
team in the league, will be in Exet-
er June 6 for a grudge match:
"It will be a much closer game,"
promised coach Gary Hartman.
The outcome of Saturday's game
was unpredictable as Exeter was
short of players and brought up
four Midget age players for this
contest.
Lead of batter midget Ben
McCann had a strong game, with
some fine defensive plays and a
strong bat, hitting three singles in
six at bats. Paul Gregus contributed
a single, as well as being hit twice
by the Thomdale pitcher. Ryan
Armstrong hit a single, while Jeff
Reid scored a run after being hit by
a pitch and stealing second base.
"These Midget players all looked
really confident against the older
Thorndale team," said Hartman
knowing this young talent will soon
be coming up through the ranks .to
jointhe Junior squad.
Darryl .Hartman . belted.-twa•.dou•.
Ible,l and a single. Blake Schade,
Scot Kemp and Mark Glavin each
had two singles.
Darryl Hartman, Dennis McCann
and Mark Glavin shared the pitch-
ing duties.
Hartman said Exeter's pitching
unit is working well, and will soon
start going more innings per game
as the weather warms up.
Next action for the Exeter Co -Op
Juniors will be against the Exeter
Express in an exhibition match this
Thursday and then in Thorndale
Sunday, June 2 at I p.m.
