South Africa games
Jim Fleming played for team Canada at the
world underwater hockey championships
EXETER - Jim Fleming returned
recently from a unique hockey tour-
nament held in South Africa. This
type of hockey isn't played on an
ice surface...it's played under-
water.
Fleming was one of three people
from Ontario chosen to represent
Canada at the World Underwater
Hockey Championships held from
April 22-28.
As the name suggests, the
played underwater. The 'Objeet ,qt
the game is to get a three_ pound
puck into the opponent's net pro-
pelling the puck across the bottom
of a swimming pool with short
hand-held sticks. Players wear a
mask, snorkel, fins and a glove to
protect their shooting hand from
scrapes.
There are six players in the water
for each team including a goalie.
Referees in the water and on the
deck watch the play and call pen-
alties. It's a strict no contact game
and the players hold their breath as
long as they can before coming up i
for air.
Team Canada placed eight out of g
11 teams from Australia, New Zea-
land, France, Great Britain. the
Netherlands, the United States, Ar-
gentina, Columbia, Zimbabwe and
host country South Africa.
This is Feming's 10th year com-
peting in this internationally rec-
ognized event and he predicts it
may soon become a popular main-
stream sport as more countries

did better than' he 'ex and
pointed out the team from Australia
as an example.
"The last time we played them
we lost 20-0 but this year we held
them down to eight goals and we
got several shots on net," he said,
Australia is five times world
champion in underwater hockey
and clinched the gold medal again
last month. South Africa took the
silver.
Fleming said Canada has helped
pioneer the sport in its early stages
mplementing some styles from ice
hockey to help develop it into a
ame of fitness and finesse.

Exeter Elite lose to
London by one run
LONDON - The Exeter Elite
womens fastball team lost to South
West London by one run on
Thursday night.
Pitchers Jane Rowe and Bonnie
Hartwick teamed up on the pitch-
er's mound and combined for 15
hits, one strikeout, and 11 runs.
Behind the bats, Jody Horton
went three for five, Chrissy Mor-
gan three for four and Ann Walper
hit a triple to bring in two runs.
Despite the one run loss, coach
Tim Moore said the Elite ran the
bases well and took advantage of
the other team's mistakes."
It was an excellent game all
around but we made too many
mental errors which should come
around in time," said Moore. "The
girls need to concentrate and com-
municate more to work together in
the field."
Playing in the Tri -County Inter-
mediate league, the Elite will play
their next game on the road when
they meet the Melbourne Majors
Thursday and Ilderton next
Wednesday.
Their next home game is sched-
uled for Sunday night at 9 p.m.
against Oneida.
