By Joan Beierling Varma Correspondent VARNA - Easter Sunday church services with Varna -Goshen com- bined held in Varna was a full house with Rev. Willie Ziegler in charge of the worship. Scripture readings were read by Willie Lau- rie and Marg Hayter. The Varna - Goshen combined choir entertained with an anthem "Hosanna! Blessed is He". The flowers placed in the church were in loving memory of Rachel Johnston presented by her family. Sincere sympathy and prayers go out to her family. Next Sunday, April 14 there will he a farewell to Miriam DeRivers. Rev. Wilena Brown will lead the service. A social time will follow. Please bring sandwiches and squares sufficient for your family. Sunday, April 21 the service vill be in Goshen with Rev. W. ',edger in charge. Sunday, April 28 the service will he in Goshen oncc again and Jane Kipfer will he conducting the ser- vice. She is a graduating minister and the daughter of Jim and Janet Papple. This is also Camp Sunday. Bring your Canadian Tire money for Camp Menesetung. "Five Alive" invites you to "Raise the Roof with Laughter" at Kippen United Church on Sunday, April 28 at 7:30 p.m. There will be special musical guests and many more surprises. Participating churches are Bayfield, Varna - Goshen and Brucefield-Kippen. The Huron -Perth U.C.W. Presby- terial event will be April 22 at Mitchell United Church at 6:30 p.m. The theme is "Declare His Work with Rejoicing." Confirmation classes will be starting on Tuesdays from 4:30 to 6 p.m. toward the end of April. Canoe rally The Stanley Township Annual Canoe Rally will be held next Sun- day, April 14 with registration at 12:30 p.m. Baseball There is one more Saturday left to register your child for Stanley Township Baseball this Saturday, April 13 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon at the Complex. Cost is $15 for T -ball children and $20 for other single children or $40 per family. Auction The Huron Centennial School auction is being held on Saturday, April 20 at the Complex. The pro- ceeds will go to improving a base- ball diamond and community and assisting in the purchase of some basic learning materials for each division. Tickets are $9 each and are available from the Parents Council members or from June at the school office. Ticket price in- cludes a cold buffet at the closing of the auction and door prizes. Personals Congratulations to Bernice and Charles Reid on the birth of their new granddaughter, born to daugh- ter and son-in-law Charlene and Dwight Schnar. Stan -Lee The Stan -Lee sponsored a euchre at the Complex, April 3 at 8 p.m.. and all the proceeds to go to the Clinton Hospital Auxiliary. They had 12 tables and prizes were won by: Ladies High Mrs. Bill Cald- well; Ladies Low, Helen McKay: Mens High, Bill Pepper; Mens Low, Wilfred Chuter; Lone Hands pink and blue cards, Jean McEwen and Josie McGregor. Four draws were won by Hugh McKay, Alex Ostrom, Doug McAsh and Ina Neeb. There was $164.00 given at the door and the club decided to make up the donation of $200.00 out of their treasury. Lunch was served by the club. The president of the club an;• nounced the Zone 8 Spring Rally will be held in Dashwood on April 18. Registration is set for 9:30 to, 10 a.m. The fee is $3.00 per per- son. Stan -Lee Club is to entertain at,. Huronview on April 17 at 2 p.m.! and the women are reminded toy bring cookies or squares. A volun!i teer was needed to look after the May meeting. Residents of Blue Water model their Easter bonnets They paraded through the hallways of the Home on Good Friday. ZURICH - Monday, April 1 the residents of Blue Water Rest Home played a few April Fool jokes on their peers and staff to brighten up the day and to find out just who was alert on a Monday morning. At noc , tenants' of Maplewoods Apartments also got in on the act as they visited the Home for their monthly noon meal out. Verda Baechler, Vera Shantz, Anna Erb, Laura Gascho, Meda O'Brien and Ila O'Rourke enjoyed the dining company of Josef Risi, Administrator, and Donna Klopp, Aux- iliary president, volunteer waitress. Tuesday afternoon Bible Study was led by Win- nie Hutton of Zurich Mennonite Church. In the evening members of the Auxiliary visited the Home with the video of the Hay Days Fashion Show held earlier in February at the Zurich Arena to a full house. Carmel Sweeney and Paul Klopp chaired the evening activities. The video showed many of the fashions from the past 150 years the women and men of Hay Town- ship wore to various functions of that era, which in- cluded a swimsuit for the chilly waters of Lake Hu- ron worn by Klopp. Paul, wife Heather, Heidi Klopp, Megan Swee- ney and Maria Mathonia modeled a few of the cos- tumes they wore in the show. Cake and cupcakes were served by Cannel, Anne Flaxbard, Theo Van- denboom and Marilee Ayotte. Resident Clara Hamilton thanked the committee for an evening of memories. Wednesday evening was bingo time for the resi- dents with extra prizes of Easter chocolates won by Esther Makins, Stewart Thiel, Vera Shantz, Vera Thiel, Elda Bender, Annie Wiltert and Adeline De- nomy., Pastor Phil Bender, Zurich Mennonite Church,' conducted Thursday afternoon Chapel Service. Fr. Matthias Wronski, St. Boniface Church, held com- munion. Thursday evening, Cathy Shantz, Adjuvant super- vised the coloring of Easter eggs. The residents' fa- vorite colors of blue, green, red, pink, brown and yellow were used to enhance the Easter basket. The eggs were left to dry and became a protein -rich breakfast for the residents on Good Friday. Good Friday was "Bonnet Day" and all the resi- dents donned their favorite hat for the day. In the afternoon it was a stroll along the imaginary "Board Walk" as they did an Easter parade throughout the hallways of the Home showing off their Easter bonnets. • Easter Sunday was enjoyed by many residents visiting with their families and friends, either at the Home or a trip to their hornes for dinner out. The residents look forward to a visit from the Cubs and Scouts on April 9, and a visit from Geri Fashions on April 16. 1 UCW units hold monthly meetings Shrink art was dem- onstrated at one of the meetings. Welcome home to Don and Irene Roloson who have returned from their winter home in Florida. The annual pork barbecue at Wesley United Church was well at- tended on Wednesday evening, April 3. A Good Friday service for the Granton Wesley pastoral charge was held at Granton United Church at 7 p.m. It took the form of a re- flective skit with members of lust, churches taking part. The Easter Sunrise service was held at the Granton United Church on Sunday, April 7 at 7:30 a.m. and was in the form of a television in- terview at the tomb. A breakfast followed at the church and in the hall. The traditional Easter Sunday communion service was held at Wesley United Church at 10 a.m. led by Pastor Normalie Voakes. UCW Unit 2 met at Julie Riddell's place on Monday night, April 1. Ju- lie opened with a reading 'Lean to the light'. Business included making a do- nation to the General UCW and planswere made for the Sunrise Breakfast and for doing some ca- tering. The program for the general meeting in June was also dis- cussed. Winners were: Ladies high, Mary McCann; Ladies low, Doreen Lightfoot; Ladies most lone hands, Mary Moser; Mens high, Ross Pickering; Mens low won by Nola Lewis playing a man's card; Mens most lone hands, Keith Rock. Six tables were in play. Personals Several folks in this area attended the joint Good Friday service held this year at Church of God in Grand Bend. Jamie and Karen Guenther•Green of London provided the special mu- sic at Grcenway United Church on Easter Sunday. The Green's and baby daughter Sonja, spent the weekend with Karen's mother, Ma- bel Fraser at Shipka. Annie Ziclrnan attended her "Jan- zen" family Easter gathering, Sun- day, March 31 at the home of Bill •. and Ellen Janzen, in Leamington, where 30 relatives gathered. With Don and Elizabeth Adams for Easter were their three grand- sons, Andrew, Dean and Colin, and their parents, Brock and Dianne Adams of London. Easter Sunday dinner guests with Fermon and Leota Snyder were Su- zanne and Otto Plein, Chris and Melissa of Elmira, Edwin and Gail Snyder and sons, of Mount Brydg- es and Keith and Nancy Snyder, of Greenway. Holiday and weekend visitors with Hugh and Annie Morenz were Annie's brother Bill Coleman and two of his grandchildren, Elisha and Brandon of Kippen, their son Bill and wife Sue of London. Women in this area attended the Easter Ecumenical service, April 9, at Grand Bend United Church. Easter Sunday dinner guests with Mabel Fraser were Evelyn Nichol- son of Courtright and her daughter Leona Moore of Sarnia, Lorne and Dorothy Fenner, Jamie and Karen Guenther -Green and daughter Son- ja of London and they celebrated Lorne's Good Friday birthday. Riddell then demonstrated shrink art and each member made an East- er necklace. Tea and dessert were served by' the hostess. Unit 3 met on Tuesday night, April 2 at April Bryan's home, Joan Hayden and Bryan convened the program when a video was shown about relationships with old- er people, regarding their feelings, wishes, determination etc. versus younger caregivers. A discussion followed. Elizabeth Garrett led the business discussion when plans were final- ized for the Easter breakfast. A lunch of hot cross buns was served by the committee in charge. Unit five members enjoyed the monthly Salvation Army dinner and program in St. Marys on Tues- day evening, March 26 in place of a regular meeting. Have a news tip?
