Spring Sing
EXETER - In her 10th year of
singing, 15 -year-old Meaghan
Straw will perform as part of the
90 -member St. Marys Children's
Choir in a Spring Sing sponsored
by Partners in Community Living
on March 31 at Exeter United
Church.
With most choir participants
from the St. Marys, Stratford,
Mitchell, Thomdale and London
area, Meaghan is the only member
from Huron County.
She became interested in singing
b,y itis tp i:e5 bIgthers,, is,
Stephen and Jeremy, for five years
while they performed in the Strat-
ford Boy Choir.
In her first year with the choir,
which is for children aged seven to
16, Meaghan began as a Brio, rep-
resenting the junior division, then
graduated to the Presto senior sec-
tion. Within the choir, she also
takes part in specialty singing
groups.
After singing alto for one year,
she became a soprano for a few
years before returning to alto in her
fifth year. Although she admitted
she used to enjoy singing most, she
now funds the social aspect of being
a choir member very rewarding.
"I think the best for Meaghan...is
meeting the 'children," said her
mother, Rosemary.
Lately Meaghan practices with
the choir at St. Marys Central
School three nights a week and par-
ticipates in a joint practice with the
Brios once a month.
"That's just as bad as being a
hockey mom," said Rosemary.
The choir, which was founded in
1981, won first place at the pro-
vincial level of the Canadian Im-
perial Bank of Commerce Music
Competition for the fifth con-
secutive year in 1995. The group
also released its first CD recording
in December titled, Sing for Joy!, a
collection of folk, choral and sea-
sonal songs.
"We sing a lot of music by Ca-
;nadians," said Meaghan. "I don't
• think I have a favorite piece. It's al-
ways changing."
As well as attending music camp
every September, Meaghan travels
to take part in international choir
festivals. Two years ago she went
on a choir tour to Atlanta, Georgia.
. In conjunction with The Lung
Association, the group is holding
an auction named We Breathe,
therefore We Sing, on April 26 at
Knox Presbyterian Church in Strat-
ford. As well as performing annual
spring performances, the choristers
sing in Christmas concerts.
"You get a lot out .of it," said
Meaghan. "It's fun. Lots of extra
Work."

Several residents remembered
reading the book as children. A
number of diners also stayed and
enjoyed the show.
The St. Patrick's party Friday af-
ternoon sponsored by the Hensall
Legion and Ladies Auxiliary was a
rollicking success. Gladys Van Eg-
mond and her Olde Tyme music
group were wonderful and played
for an extra half hour when resi-
dents weren't ready to quit danc-
ing. Thank you to the Legion for
providing the delicious angle food
cakes and ice cream for refresh-
ments. It was nice to have some
people from Braemor Manor join
us for the afternoon of fun.
