It is my belief, that this can only be achieved with an ongoing commitment from Canada to support socio-economic development in these countries. We have to remember, as a trading nation, that we are in a favorable position. Having to rely solely on aid is no advantage to anyone, no matter what coun- try they live in. We can praise this latest "Team Canada" initiative but we must also take it one step further and stimulate interest in building resources in our trading partners and in the area of internation- al development as a whole. Sincerely, John Martin, Chief Executive Officer, USC Canada Dear Editor: In the aftershock of the Harris government's dras- tic cuts to funding of valuable social, medical, and cultural programs, we might endorse the dose of cold reality being administered to a society which has consumed more than it could afford. But why, in the great clean-up, did the Tories retain the separ- ate school system? Religious privilege stands na- kedly visible while valuable services grope for a shred of security. This rank injustice offends human values and destroys the equitable distribution of public dollars. Ontario premiers and education ministers, in suc- cession, have claimed that the Canadian Constitu- tion renders them powerless to remove this expen- sive, self-serving, ostentatious privilege. But the Constitution did not leave society shackled forever to the cleavage between Roman Catholics and Prot- estants. Using a province's absolute power over ed- ucation, Manitoba abolished its separate schools through a Constitutional provision sintiliar to Onta- Separate School system retained rio Section 93. Newfoundland is abolishing its mul- ti -denominational school system with a change in the Constitution. These are legal precedents which offer workable alternatives for Ontario. In an omnibus bill introduced simultaneously with the mini budget on November 29, many sweeping changes will be made without public consultation. If the Tories can justify the use of such draconian leg- islation, they can also institute one public system of education in which there is no remaining vestige of ecclesiastical powe?. It is not an injustice to Roman Catholics to require them to practice their faith as others do -- i.e. in their homes, churches and volun- tary institutions. They would lose exclusive political status and power, but at over $250 million a year to maintain, they would lose a privilege which Ontario cannot afford. Their pain would be no different than that of others. R.H. Patterson Friends of Public Education Box 491, Pembroke ON K8A 6X7 A costly move "We question how this expendi- ture...can be justified." Dear Editor: To the taxpayers of Huron County: We are writing this letter as concerned taxpayers of Huron County and employees of the Huron County Home Care Program. In January 1996 the County is planning to move the Home Care Program to the newly renovated Health and Library Complex, from a facility in Clinton that will then be sitting empty. The taxpay- ers will continue to p y the rent and upkeep on this empty building until,. lugust of 1997. At the same time, rent will be paid at the new facility. Added to this will be the significant cost of moving, plus com- puter and phone installations. The actual move over approximately four business days, will cause considerable disruption to the peo- ple HomeCare serves. We question how this expenditure at this time of cutbacks, at all levels of government can be justi- fied. If you share our concerns please contact your lo- cal Reeve. Sincerely, Concerned Case Managers, Therapists, and Support Staff Clara Alexander, Beverly Anstett, Merrilyn Black and 28 others DONATIONS Asa vo/untery Nona or 'u» **Noma* donle ale fontIndividuals or /n1w.N stod groups M the community. International development week in February Dear Editor: Last month's high profile trade mission to India, Pakistan, Malaysia and Indonesia by Prime Minister Chretien, the majority of provincial premiers and 300 Canadian business leaders, provided a strong indication of the future direction of Canada's for- eign policy. Canada is an active trading nation and we should have no quarrel with supporting an increase in trade with our partners with one stipulation... that it is mutually advantageous to the parties involved. Un- fortunately, as is the case with many of our Asian partners, trade takes place while millions of people struggle on incomes far below the poverty level. To be an effective trading partner, these countries have to be able to stand on their own feet with equal February marks Heart and Stroke Month VODERICH - The Heart and Sfroke'Ttitindaiion, 'Huron Chap- ter,. met Monday, January 15, in the4Chapter office, in Goderich.
