January 15, 1986 - During his retirement party Friday night Hen-
sall pubic school principal Bob Raeburn received two pictures of
the school of years ago from staff member Eric Mansfield and a for-
mer student Steve Kyle, who is now vice -pr incipal,of a school in the
• Tillsonburg area.
25 YEARS AGO
January 21, 1971 - Vic Fulcher of Exeter, a 21 year-old student at
Fanshawe College announced Monday night that he would enter the
race for leadership of the Ontario Progressive Conservative Party,
however at a press conference Wednesday the communications arts
student said he would be withdrawing.
The 1971 warden of the county of Huron is Wingham reeve Jack
Alexander.
Donald Dearing was named 1971 president of the Exeter Agricul-
tural Society.
Recently at the Exeter curling club, a mixed rink skipped by Alvin
Pym scored a perfect eight -ender with the help of Art Cann, Helen
Jermyn and Betty Coates.
35 YEARS AGO
January 16, 1961 - Clarence Down, R.R. 1, Hensall was elected
chairman of the Ontario Vegetable Growers Marketing board.
Curlers at R.C.A.F. Centralia set aside their saws and hammers,
picked up their brooms and enjoyed themselves when their new
curling rink was officially opened on Monday.
40 YEARS AGO
January 15, 1956 - Charles MacNaughton, manager of Jones,
MacNaughton Seeds of Exeter led a discussion group on "Let's
Cake stock of the seed industry" at the annual meeting of the Ontario
Soil and Crop Improvement Association in Toronto this week.
Kirkton Community Association, sponsors of the famous Kirkton
Garden Party will celebrate its tenth anniversary with a birthday
banquet on February 10.
Simon Nagle, Exeter bantams star goal tender, scored his third
shutout of the season Tuesday night when the locals blanked Hen-
sall 7-0.
Norman Jones, eight year veteran of Hensall council has an-
nounced he will be a candidate for reeve to 011 the post left vacant
by the death of William Parke last week.
Joan Thomson, top graduate and Queen of SHDHS and daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Thomson has been awarded a $400 bursary
from the Atkinson Foundation in Toronto. She is now a student at
MacDonald Hall in Guelph.
50 YEARS AGO
January 16, 1946 - Richard Ernest Shaddick of Hensall was elect-
ed Warden of Huron County at the January meeting of county coun-
cil which opened in Goderich, Tuesday.
After nearly 60 years of faithful service on the Exeter fire fighting
brigade Capt. Ed Treble resigned at the annual meeting Thursday
night. Bill Chambers was elected to succeed him as fire chief.
Cyril Strange, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Strange, Exeter and
CFRB staff announcer reported in minute detail Eaton's Christmas
parade over CFRB Toronto radio.
75 YEARS AGO
January 17, 1921 - Mr. W.J. Beer last week graced the front of
his place of business with a large and beautiful electric sign.
Mr. M.W. Schenk of Stratford has opened a new grocery, confec-
tionery and bakery shop at Dashwood.
Mr. R.W. Murphy has withdrawn from the Dearing agency and
the agency has been transferred to Mr. William Ward.
100 YEARS AGO
January 16, 1896 - The Huron County Council will convene in
Goderich on the 28th inst. There is considerable speculation as to
who will get the warden's chair. The choice will rest between
George McEwen, reeve of Hay township and Stephen township's
reeve Henry Silber. Both are strong men and could equally well fill
the office, but Mr. Eilber being the older member of the board will
likely get the preference. This end of the county is entitled to the
wardenshie this year and in any event will secure the honor.
We are Just now enjoying a genuine winter, with snow in some
places being five and six feet deep. The general sleighing is good
and farmers and others are taking advantage of it to move their
wood, logs, etc; while bricks are being moved in large quantities.
