As the year draws to a close the Times -Advocate would like to take this opportunity to review some of the events that have been published in the sports pages of the T -A over the last 12 months. This is only a brief overview of the many accomplishments achieved by the many sport- ing enthusiasts in our com- munity but we would like to wish all the coaches and ath- letes a successful 1996. January •The Stephen Rebels win the Pee- wee Regional Silver Stick final in Kincardine. Jeff Finkbeiner scores in triple overtime to lift the Stephen Rebels to a 4-3 win over Ripley. •Seven teams compete in the South Huron Indoor Masters Soccer Tournament at the Huron Park Recreation Centre. It was the first time a masters tournament was held in the area for players who are over 30 years -old. •The West beat the East in the Annual OHA Junior Development League All-Star game in Lucan. Lu - can Irish forward Greg DePrest earned the number two star and Shayne Robinson from the Exeter Hawks was the game's number three star. March •The South Huron District High School hockey team edged Central Huron 7-6 to win their first Huron - Perth title and advance to WOSSA semi-finals. • •Alicia Lawrence scored five goals to lift the Exeter Tweens to a 6-5 win over Lambeth and clinch the gold medal at the Ontario Re- gional Ringette Tournament held in Kitchener. Ap�•il� •The Exeter Ladies Auxiliary Peewees sweep the Prince Edward County Kings in three games to clinch the Ontario Minor Hockey Association title. •Two Stephen Township minor hockey teams brought home pro- vincial titles. The Peewee Rebels triumphed over Port Carling and the Atom Sonics beat Ops Town- ship to earn AII-Ontario champion- ships. May •Three meetings held to revive senior "A" hockey in Exeter failed as executives officially withdrew the Exeter Mohawks from the OHA league. Sports Photo of the year 4 2. Webb was golfing with partners Jim Guenther and Steve Pearce and he was the last player to attempt the tie breaking shot to win the tournament. February *Over 580 skaters representing 19 different clubs from four counties competed in the annual H.O.M.E. competition held at the South Hu- ron Recreation Centre. The Exeter Figure Skating Club Hosted the competition and placed six skaters •OHA Junior Development League rivals The Exeter Hawks and the Lucan Irish squared off at the South Huron Recreation Centre. The back and forth battle ended with Lucan winning 6-4. •The South Huron District High School boys junior basketball team earned a WOSSA berth after win- ning the Huron conference tide with a 52-44 win over Cioderich. 4 •Stu Homuth of Exeter shot a hole -in -one on a par four at Iron- wood Golf course. The ex- traordinary shot occurred on the number 12 hole during a rainy and windy day. •Grand Bend Motorplex official- ly opened. The newly constructed speedway off Highway 21 opened their track for the first time since 1969. •South Huton District High School honored its top athletes dur- ing an Athletic Awards night. The Panther award went to Jen Romphf, the Paw award was hand- ed to Tara Pepper and Adam Jean. Athletes of the Year` awards were earned by juniors Sara Szabo, Mark Bell, and seniors Cara Gard- ner and Bryan McAllister. •Joey Forrester, a 15 year-old student at SHDHS won the Pro- vincial Championship Bowler of the year in Brampton. July •Over 15 powerful off -shore rac- ing boats fired up their engines and roared out of Grand Bend harbor in the second annual Lake Huron Poker Run. •Three Exeter men, Peter Vander Burgt, Paul McInnis and Dave Bry- son earned the honor of repre- senting Grand Bend Motorplex at a drag race competition in In- dianapolis. October •Bob Hamacher from Hensall, re- tired Staying Together, the fastest horse in the world, from stan- dardbred horse racing after being inducted in the Hall of Champions. •SHDHS student Christian Stuck - less won the Huron -Perth Cham- pionship in the junior boys division covering a 6,000 meter course in 21:02 seconds. Concentration is a vital ele- ment to any athlete's performance and it is something one can clearly see on the face of Megan Ratz as she lines up a free-throw during a senior girls basketball game at SHDHS in October. The Panthers were in the process of beating F.E. Madill 47-34. •Jodee Grasdahl and Robert Khamsouk from Exeter Tae Kwon. Do competed in the Canadian Jun- ior Tae Kwon Do championships held in Toronto winning gold and silver medals. •The Exeter Saddle Club hosted their annual Adult Team Challenge competition featuring 50 riders and horses. Exeter riders placed second in performance and gaming events. August •A new record for the fastest mo- torcycle in the world was set at Grand Bend Motorplex when racer Dan Butters shattered the previous record by .02 of a second burning down the quarter mile track at 7.05 seconds with a top speed of 181 mph. •Former SHDHS student Randy Johnson won the gold medal in jav- elin throwing at the All -Ontario Track and Field Association meet in Kitchener. •The SHDHS field hockey team qualified for WOSSA after winning the Huron Perth Championship on their home turf. November •The Exeter Ri ierview Estates Juveniles won the Ontario Baseball Association Championship in Blenheim. The Juveniles played five games against three very tough teams to clinch the All -Ontario title. Septenther •Legendary 60's drag racer Bill "Maverick" Golden brought his fa- mous wheelstander drag racing truck to Grand Bend Motorplex. The truck races down the quarter mile track on its back wheels at 130 mph. •The SHDHS field hockey team captured their ninth consecutive WOSSA title in Ingersoll launch - I 1 .". ,r ►'►r. • Ili .,1 7 • .... .:, .- 441: ... :qv". ii ei. , jr _ .'4. The pic- ture was taken a fraction of a second before Johnson launched a javelin, and captures the strength and intensi- ty harnessed by an athlete at his peak performance. Johnson, a graduate of SHDHS and currently attending South East Missouri State University, captured a gold medal at the Provincial Track and Field Championship held in Kitchener last summer throwing his javelin 63.7 meters. ing them into the Ontario Cham- pionships. The three -time Ontario champions defended their reigning title in Toronto but had to settle for a bronze medal after losing in the semi-finals. •Exeter and Stephen teams earned top marks during the sev- enth annual Bill Batten Minor Hockey tournament. •Three Exeter teams win medals in during the Exeter and Area Ringette Association's 32 team tournament. December •The Exeter Hawks lead the Jun- ior "D" league with 17 consecutive wins after defeating Delhi 10-2 at the Rec Centre. Their winning streak came to an end when they tied North Middlesex 4-4 but re- main undefeated going into the new year. •Four SHDHS students represent Huron in the Huron vs Perth all-star volleyball game. Juniors Darryl Romphf, Luke Sims, and seniors Bryan McAllister and Adam Jean represented South Huron. Sports Photo of the year 4 4. Most sports, by their very nature, are fast and exciting. This holds true for children, as well as adults, and is clearly exemplified in this photo of Byron Frelter passing off the baton to Rachel Steele during a relay race.
