Lucan Irish go 1-1-1 in last
three games of Jr "D" play
The 5-3-1 Irish will host the undefeated Exeter Hawks Wednesday
LUCAN - The Lucan Irish played
three games last week recording a
win a loss and a tie.
The Irish played the Hagersville
Hawks to a three all tie at home
Wednesday night before losing to
Thamesford 5-2 Friday.
Lucan won their third game of
the week against Port Stanley Sat-
urday night 5-2 despite being out -
shot 40-27. Goalie Knyvet Carson's
solid performance in net kept the
Irish alive allowing Dave Jenken to
score the go-ahead goal for the
Irish 11 minutes into the second pe-
riod.
Christien Criel, Chad Greenlee.
and Trevor Emms also scored for
the Irish.
Coach Scott Bogart said he
wasn't happy with his tcam's per-
formance Wednesday night.
"They [Hagersville] are not that
good of a team, we should have
won that game but we weren't play-
ing to the best of our abilities,"
said Bogart. "We didn't have any
spark at all and we were forced to
play down at their level."
Bogart said his team played bet-
ter Friday night but it still wasn't
enough to claim the two points over
the strong Thamesford club.
"They are a good team and that
was a legitimate loss. I thought we
played well. We had some good
chances hut we just couldn't put
the puck in the net."
The 5-3-1 Lucan Irish will take
on the undefeated Exeter Hawks at
home Wednesday night in an at-
tempt to end their winning streak.
Bogart said he isn't intimidated
by the Hawk's successful 5-0
record and plans to curtail the Exet-
er scorers with some aggressive
fore checking.
"The Hawks have a couple of po-
tent offensive lines we're going to
pay attention to but we'll have to
wait and see what happens," he
said.
. Senior boys volleyball defeat
five schools in tournament play
Kim Farquhar beats an opponent to the ball during a South
Huron Field Hockey game in Exeter on Thursday. The Panthers
beat Listowel 8-0 and Mitchell 3-0 to clinch the Huron -Perth
Championship qualifying them for WOSSA.

for W.O.S.S.A
EXETER - The South Huron
field hockey team qualified for
WOSSA after winning the Huron
Perth Championship on their home
turf Thursday.
The Panthers crushed Listowel 8-
0 in the semi-finals before de-
feating Mitchell 3-0 in the final
game to claim their fourth straight
Huron Perth title.
Goal scorers for the Panthers
were Danielle Miners, Kiin Far-
quhar and Kim MacLean.
South Huron will travel to In-
gersoll Friday where they will play
the first place team in the Mid-
dlesex and the Oxford Elgin
Leagues.
The Panthers will need a clean
sweep in Ingersoll in order to ad-
vance to OFSAA and defend their
Ontario Championship.
Head coach, Jim Workman said
they will be using the same strat-
egy that has served them well
throughout the regular season.
"We score more goals than the
opposition and were not going to
change that at this stage in the
game," said Workman.
The Panthers have adopted an all-
out attack game plan relying on
their explosive offense to score ear-
ly and keep the lead for the rest of
the game.
"It's important for us to score the
early goals and keep applying the
pressure."
Although Workman doesn't like
to look too far ahead, preferring to
take it one game at a time, he feels
the girls arc ready to go all the
way.
"I won't predict if we're going to
win but the girls are prepared and
they know what they, have to do,"
he said.
The South Huron field hockey
team won OFSAA for the last three
consecutive years and the de-
fending Ontario champions will be
under a lot of pressure to retain
their title.
"Every team out there [at WOS-
SAJ will be trying to knock us off
that pedestal but I'm confident
we're up for the challenge."

MITCHELL - The senior boys volleyball team de-
feated five Huron -Perth school teams to place first in
a tournament Saturday.
The Panthers faced Dorchester, Clinton and Norwell
in regular pool play winning every game except for
one against Norwell.
In the semi-finals South Huron beat Seaforth taking
two out of three games with Adam Jean leading the
Panthers with his uncanny passing abilities.
The win pitted South Huron against a strong Mitch-
ell team in the finals. With Exeter losing 14-2 in the
first game, it looked as if the Panthers would drop their
first game to Mitchell.
However, Marty Debruyn and Sean Beattie rallied
their team with some outstanding passing and hitting,
helping the Panthers stage an incredible scoring drive
to come back and pull the game into extra points beat-
ing Mitchell 17-15.
South Huron won the second game 15-7 to round out
the tournament finishing in first place.
SH cross-country runners
meet in HP championship
Christian Stuckless wins first place in the junior division
WINGHAM - The South Huron
Cross Country team posted some
impressive results at the Huron -
Perth cross country meet last
Tuesday.
Christian Stuckless won the Hu-
ron Perth Championship in the
junior boys division covering the
6,000 meter course in 21:02 sec-
onds winning by a margin of 500
meters.
Michelle Finkbeiner hung on in
the midget girls race to finish in
second place.
Junior girls Patty Wegg and
Melissa Snell ran their best races
of the year to finish 16th and
24th respectively.
The senior boys team gave the
best performance in Huron and
placed second overall in Huron
Perth. Kevin Beierling led the
way with a fourth place finish. He
was followed closely by Jason
Maskell, 9th and Eric Hundey,
10th. Joe Forrester sacrificed his
chances in the junior race to run
with the junior team and placed
19th.
The midget boys team also
placed first in Huron and second
overall in Huron Perth.
Dan Snell had a strong per-
formance placing 6th. Shawn
Stuckless was 10th, Dave Ro-
billiard 1 1th, Matt Knox 12th,
Matt Verhoog 17th. All five
were in the top half of the race.
Cross country coach Joe Fulop
credits his team's overall success
to "hard work and a never say -
die -attitude."
Christian Stuckless' first place
finish in the junior boys race
was a personal best for Stuckless
who took home the Huron Perth
Championship in his division.
"I was just expecting to finish
in the top three," said Stuckless
who admits placing first sur-
prised him. "Halfway through
the race 1 turned around to look
behind me and I couldn't see the
second place runner."
Stuckless crossed the finish
line a minute and 24 seconds
ahead of the second place run-
ner. The Huron -Perth win al-
lowed Stuckless to redeem him-
self after a disappointing
performance a year before.
Stuckless placed fifth last year in
Huron Perth after sustaining a
stress fracture in his ankle.
"It was a chance for me to do it
over again and I'm glad I made up
for it," he said.
Stuckless and the rest of the
South Huron team that qualified
for WOSSA will be hoping for a
repeat performance Thursday
when they race at a meet to be
held at the Springwater Conserva-
tion Area near Aylmer.

Centennials honor top
players at soccer banquet
Centennials coach Jeff Playfoot announces his departure
Chris Skalkos T -A staff
EXETER - The Exeter Centennials senior mens soc-
cer club held an awards banquet at the Three AAA
Family restaurant Saturday night to honor the team's
top players and celebrate one of their most successful
seasons to date.
The Centennials finished their regular season with a
respectible 9-8-3 win/loss/tie record in the central di-
vision and narrowly missed making the playoffs.
They were eliminated from playoff contention when
they played St Columban in their second last game of
the season. The Centennials only needed one goal to
secure a post -season berth but came up empty in the
scoreless game.
"Missing the playoffs by just one point was dis-
sapointing but we did a lot better than last year," said
coach Jeff Playfoot.
Former player and long-time supporter Dick Lord
said this was the best year for the team since 1986
when they were playing in the now defunk Ausable
League.
The players voted to see who would receive three of
the four awards handed out during the evening. Joe
D'Ariano received the MVP award, Pat Donnelly was
given the Sportsmanship award and John Flanagan
took home the Hustle award.
To no one's surprise, the top scorer award went to
Nick Szabo who recorded an amazing 16 goals despite
starting late in the season.
Next on the scoring list was George McEwan with
six goals and Rudy Veldhuizen, Joe Martens, and And-
ers Millner with four goals each.
During the evening Playfoot announced that he
would not be with the Centennials next season. He has
deckled to coach the Exeter Fury soccer club who play
in the east division.
"I'm glad I spent the time 1 did with the Centennials
but 1 felt it was time for me to have a change," he said.
Playfoot said he hopes the Centennials and the Fury
will combine to form one team featuring the best
players of the two clubs. An "A" and "0" division sys-
tem could be created if there are enough people inter-
ested in playing.
1 feel that one team will increase the profile of sen-
ior soccer in Exeter," said Playfoot.

streak
EXETER - The Exeter Hawks re-
main undefeated in junior "D"
hockey after winning two back to
back games on Friday and Satur-
day.
Joe McDonald scored five goals
and earned two assists during Exet-

es on their home ice Friday night.
Teammate Shayne Robinson add-
ed three goals with Jeff Glavin and
Chris McDonald contributing one
a piece.
Exeter's 5-1 victory over St.
George on Saturday can be credited
to one player. Goalie Darren Kints
had an exceptional game between
the pipes stopping 63 shots on net,
30 of which came in the third peri-
od.
Chris Kennedy led the scoring for
the Hawks with two goals, fol-
lowed by Ryan Chamney, Nathan
Burns and Sean McCann who add-
ed singles.
Head coach, Dave Revington said
he was surprised they scored 10
goals against Mount Brydges con-
sidering they were an undefeated
team going into the game.
"We're playing considerably bet-
ter as a team and I'm fairly happy
with the defense." said Revington
adding the rookies and veterans are
mixing well together on the ice.
The Hawks will take their 5-0
record to Lucan Wednesday night
when the face off against the Irish
