Tips to reduce the environmental
impact of driving your vehicle
Regardless of the
fuel you use, driving
a car will have an
impact on the
environment. Here's
how to minimize that
impact, and save money:
_ Whenever possible, leave your
car at home. Try car pooling or use
public transportation. In good
weather, give the old bike -- and
the old muscles -- a workout. _
Keep to the speed limit. Today,
leave a little earlier than usual; then
sit back, relax, ease up on the gas
pedal...and enjoy.
_ Improve fuel efficiency by
lowering your vehicle's wind and
rolling resistance. Keep tires
properly inflated and remove roof
racks when not in use. _ For
highway driving, close the sunroof
and windows: use the vehicle's
tlow-through ventilation instead.
To help you accelerate slowly,
imagine a raw egg between your
foot and the gas pedal.
_ Keep the engine properly tuned.
_ Avoid idling. If you will be
stopped for more than a minute,
turn the engine off.
_ Listen to local traffic reports
and bypass traffic snarls.
_ Watch the traffic ahead of you
and adjust your speed to changes in
traffic flow.
_ Ease off the gas pedal or
downshift well in advance, allowing
the car to slow gradually and
smoothly.
_ Combine errands so that you
can do several in the same trip.
_ Use the overdrive gear on the
highway.
Remove any unnecessary
weight from the vehicle.
Be sure the parking brake is
off. Don't rest your foot on the
brake pedal while driving.
_ In winter, avoid prolonged
warm-ups. Thirty seconds should
do it. Drive slowly for the first few
kilometers to allow the engine
components to warm up. _ Use a
timer switch to turn on your block
heater two or three hours before
you plan to drive. A warm engine
means easier starting.
_ In summer, use the car's
flow-through ventilation instead of
the air conditioner.

General Motors likes the cold
KAPUSKASING—
Although the
continuing and
lengthy cold spell
has incensed many
Ontario residents,
General Motors of Canada Cold
Weather Test Centre in
Kapuskasing could not have asked
for better conditions. The
automobile company has been cold
testing cars in Kapuskasing since
the 1940s and built the permanent
facility in 1972 because the
weather is considered ideal.
Kapuskasing is known for its
perfect winters —no other region
maintains a more consistent -40°C
temperature. Although these cold
climes generally only occur in
January and February, General
Motors test cars from October to
May.
"We are very happy with the
temperatures," said Kapuskasing
plant manager Jim Lonergan, who
spends his summers at the GM's
experimental engineering branch in
Oshawa. "We test in the most
severe conditions so we can have a
good product when we go to the
market. We design something
because of the effect the cold
Don't take your
brakes for granted
If your reaction time
is typical, you'll
travel about 70 feet
in an emergency
stop before your
foot reaches the brake
pedal. With visual problems such
as poor eyesight, bad lights'or
windshield wipers, or if you're
experiencing the effects of
medicine or alcohol, reaction time
will be slower.
Further, if you've neglected
mechanical maintenance, hitting
the brake pedal may be only the
beginning of your crisis. Erratic
braking action can make a bad
emergency situation worse, as it
can pull your car right into the
accident—or it may not stop at all.
That's the number one fear among
drivers, according to one survey.
Despite recent advancements in
braking system design, including
anti-lock brakes, this vital safety
system is among the most
neglected on our motor vehicles
and a leading mechanical cause of
accidents.
The chain of events that occur in
your car's braking system is as
strong as its weakest link. A
malfunction of any part of the
system can cause erratic brakes or
complete failure.
Here's what happens when you
apply the brake pedal:
The pressure of your foot against
the pedal is transferred to the
hydraulic master cylinder, where
pressurized fluid is fcd to hydraulic
cylinders at the four wheels.
On disc brakes, the caliper causes
friction pads to squeeze the
spinning rotor (like brake calipers
squeezing the rim of a bike wheel),

slowing or stopping the wheel.
On rear wheel drum brakes, a
wheel cylinder receives the pressure
and forces the brake shoes against
the rotating drums.
Some vehicles have disc brakes or
drum brakes on all four wheels;
most have a combination of disc on
front, drum on rear. In every case,
it's friction that stops the vehicle.
Motion energy is converted to heat,
which is dissipated by air cooling
the rotors and drums.
Simple as the process may sound,
it involves a complex system of
parts that must function in concert.
Friction and heat, combined with
exposure to the elements and road
contamination, lead to wear and
deterioration of the braking system.
Periodic inspection and service is
essential.

weather has on the components and
again that is why General Motors is
here." Kapuskasing has made GM
particularly happy this year by
setting a new cold record. The
average temperature in
Kapuskasing in January was -27°C,
that is three degres colder than the
previous record set in 1982. During
its peak testing period the facility
employs 110-120 people, mostly
local people who are hired as
part-time technicians or drivers. As
well, approximately 800 engineers
and technicians periodically visit
the test facility during its season.

technicians now
face a new challenge:
keeping up with the automotive
"green" list. Air conditioning
service, for example, now
demands sophisticated
equipment and procedures;
drain oil, tires and batteries
must be properly disposed of.
Depending upon provincial
regulations, antifreeze and oil
filters are on the list. It's
unpopular, if not illegal, to
throw tires or batteries in the
trash. Cleaning solvents,
antifreeze, even shock
absorbers, which contain oil,
are among materials to be
disposed of properly.
It all adds up to a cleaner
environment, says Car Care
Canada of the Automotive
Industries Association of
Canada, but at a cost that must
be shared by vehicle owners
and the industry that services
them.
