Sports Night
tests cadet
physical fitness
HURON PARK - The Huron
Park Military Cadet Corps met last
Thursday to participate in Sports
Night, an annual fitness test.
Captain Al Cottel said 47 cadets
showed up to test their physical fit-
ness and to have some fun with
their friends.
The exercises included one arm
extension, 20 push-ups, 30 sit-ups
and a one milt eight minute run
and is considered to be the mini-
mum standard; however, Cottel
said many of them will find it chal-
lenging.
"I doubt half of them will pass,"
said Cottel but added they can work
towards a passing performance if
they don't succeed at first.
Cottel said they hold Sports
Night early in the cadet training
season to give them an idea of how
physically fit they are and how
much they need to improve to pass
by the end of the year.
"Hopefully we can 'show them
'where they need to improve so they
can work on it early," he said.
Among their mandate to promote
good citizenship and interest in the
Canadian Armed Forces, physical
fitness is a high ranking priority in
the Cadet Corps. It has to be in or-
der for a cadet to keep up with
some of the more physically de-
manding field exercises such as
drill competitions, parading and
rock climbing.
"Keeping fit is very important to
us because people often take it for
granted. If they can walk and talk
they think they're healthy," Cottel
said.

Turkey Bowl III
Bring a turkey and they will come. Mark Bell moves the football upfield during a rec-
reational football game on Thanksgiving Monday. Approximately 30 area youths gather on
a field every Thanksgiving afternoon for a rough and tumble game of tackle football.
Dubbed Turkey Bowl, the annual event is in its third year and its popularity has grown to
include team shirts and a live Turkey present for the game.
